Voices of Women Historians

The Coordinating Council for Women in History evolved from a cohort of women historians who turned their scholarly focus to the recovery of women's experiences. In so doing, they created and legitimated the field of women's history. The contributors to this volume, former CCWH officers, mark the 30th anniversary of the organization while commemorating three decades of feminist activism and scholarship. Recording the diverse paths women have taken to become historians, the essays contained in this book describe how a particular group of women negotiated the often competing demands of being a woman, a professional, and a political activist from the turbulent 1960s through the challenges of the 1990s. But beyond the celebration of personal and professional progress, this collection contributes to the emerging historiography of women's history and the literature on women in the professions. They must also remain sensitive to the beliefs and needs of family members and the legal, ethical, and spiritual ramifications of the client's death. Featuring twenty-three decision cases based on interviews with professional social workers, this unique volume allows students to wrestle with the often incomplete and conflicting information, ethical issues, and time constraints of actual cases. Instead of offering easy solutions, this book provides detailed accounts that provoke stimulating debat...

They were meant to be best friends forever. But forever doesn’t last long if one of you is dead. Bella Beckett is clearing out her mother Betty’s house when she finds a hidden diary. On the cover, two words are written: BURN THIS. According to the diary, thirty-five years earlier, Betty witnessed the murder of Bella’s childhood friend, Vicky. The diary is quickly dismissed by the police as fiction – Betty’s attempt at creative writing – but Bella is convinced they are wrong. As she uncovers a series of dark connections, it is clear Vicky’s killer is still at large. And they weren’t just someone familiar to Betty, but a person Bella herself knows well... A compulsive, twisty psychological thriller perfect for fans of Gillian McAllister, Lisa Jewell and Alice Feeney.

Building on its origins at a seminar in Oslo organized by two of the editors, this book combines classic texts of Nordic ecophilosophy and the original contributions of those influenced by this tradition to present the view that critical realism is indeed a worthy intellectual tradition to carry forward and further develop the work of the founders of Nordic ecophilosophy. It was clear at the seminar that there was a promising convergence of interests and themes in the two approaches; while at the same time, within the Nordic ecophilosophical tradition, there was appreciation of the capacity of critical realism, with its provision of a robust philosophical ontology and generation of totalizin...

Winner of the 2022 Cheryl Frank Memorial Prize. Critical realism, as a toolkit of practical ideas, helps researchers to extend and clarify their analyses. It resolves problems arising from splits between different research approaches, builds on the strengths of different methods and overcomes their individual limitations. This original text draws on international examples of health and illness research across the life course, from small studies to large trials, to show how versatile critical realism can be in validating research and connecting it to policy and practice. To meet growing demand from students and researchers, this book is based on the course at UCL, first taught by Roy Bhaskar, the founder of critical realism.
