New Zealand-born Frances Hodgkins (1869-1947) arrived in London in 1901 and, by the 1920s, had become a leading British modernist, exhibiting frequently with avant-garde artists such as Ben Nicholson, Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore. This book explores Hodgkins as a traveller across cultures and landscapes - teaching and discovering the cubists in Paris, absorbing the landscape and light of Ibiza and Morocco, and exhibiting with the progressive Seven & Five Society in London. Complete with a rich visual chronology of the artist's encounters abroad, alongside over one hundred of Hodgkins' key paintings and drawings, the book is an illuminating journey that moves us from place to place through the writings of a number of distinguished national and international art historians, curators and critics: Frances Spalding (University of Cambridge, England), Alexa Johnston (Auckland-based writer and curator), Elena Taylor (University of New South Wales, Australia), Antoni Ribas Tur (Ara newspaper, Spain), and Julia Waite, Sarah Hillary, Catherine Hammond and Mary Kisler (Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tamaki, New Zealand).

How and why do works make their way into a public art collection? Who decides what will be hung on the walls, placed on plinths, displayed in cases? These important, but seldom discussed, questions lie at the heart of this ‘cultural biography’ of the 70 years during which the Robert McDougall Art Gallery was Christchurch’s civic art gallery. The book explains how the collection came together, how it developed, and how the public, and artists and critics, reacted to it. The book is presented in three parts, each of which has its own introduction. It provides an analytical framework in detail and in context by defining terms and explaining particular, recurrent concepts. These include, a...

"Please use alternative route - that's become a very familiar phrase in our rebuilding city; it's one with special resonance for Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetu. With our building closed following the earthquakes, we've had to find a range of innovative new ways to provide quality art experiences for Christchurch residents and visitors. Since February 2011, we've been flat out running Outer Spaces, a programme of more than 80 exhibitions, projections, performances and publishing projects that aims to provide moments of sorprise, wonder and inspiration for the people who live in, work in, and visit Christchurch. We've also been committed to staying connected with schools, presenting a range of public programmes for the community, working with artists, researchers and students and of course looking after the city's art collection."--P. [2].

Brought together from New Zealand, Australia, Europe and the United States, the artists in this exhibition examine every aspect of the de-building process, from the crates art is stored in, to the paint on the walls."De-building opened on 5 February 2011 and was scheduled to run till 15 May. Unfortunately the earthquake on 22 February intervened and the Gallery has remained closed since that date. We regret that this exhibition has itself now been de-built and will not re-open. However a number of these works will be shown again, within the 'Brought to Light' exhibition, when the Christchurch Art Gallery reopens later this year."--Gallery website.
