"For more than five decades of dedicated painterly practice and exhibition, Kees Bruin has established a unique visionary identity within the framework of New Zealand realism that is enthusiastically commissioned and collected internationally. His three overlapping categories, photo-realism, super-realism and what he terms 'visionary-realism', sprang from a personal search for all things truth"--Dust jacket.

Langs Rembrandts roem

The Dutch love Rembrandt. This year will see a celebration of the 400th anniversary of his birth, remembered with many festivities and much discussed, with many high profile exhibitions. Yet this homage is less obvious than many might think. Rembrandt only became famous after his death, thanks to activities of connoisseurs, local elites, city governments and directors of museums. In Rembrandt’s Fame, the second title in the History on the Streets series, maps the actual places and events, which marked the growing fame of the gifted miller’s son from Leiden. The authors take the readers to the Leiden house where the artists was born, describe the adventures of the Amsterdam Rembrandt House, track the history of his most famous painting, The Night Watch, and go to New York to look for industrials tycoons and collectors who enriched their lives with ‘real’ Rembrandts. In Rembrandt’s Fame is a fascinating title, which shows how the myth of Rembrandt has been developed throughout the ages and has been used for specific purposes. The authors invite the readers to track the traces of the ‘brand’ Rembrandt worldwide.

The Spirit of Colin McCahon

  • Categories: Art

The Spirit of Colin McCahon provides a vivid historical contextualisation of New Zealand’s premier modern artist, clearly explaining his esoteric religious themes and symbols. Via a framework of visual rhetoric, this book explores the social factors that formed McCahon’s religious and environmental beliefs, and justifications as to why his audience often missed the intended point of spiritual his discourse – or chose to ignore it. The Spirit of Colin McCahon tracks the intricate process by which the artist’s body of work turned from optimism to misery, and explains the many communicative techniques he employed in order to arrest suspicion towards his Christian prophecy. More broadly,...

I believe that the world is being forced into a place where all must reassess all they thought they knew and understood about life and why we are here. My efforts are to guide others seeking such answers, and assist those whom feel in their hearts that there is indeed something greater to the design of life and our reasons for being here in the flesh and at this time. It is my opinion that knowledge that we have pre-existed and have been predestined for a higher purpose by the Father and Son since even before the foundations of this world, is the key which can help one to realize that indeed there is significance and a meaningful reason to the unfolding of all things and our part within them.

A Brilliant Commodity

Following diamonds from African mines to the necklines of high society women, this international history shows why Jews were central to the transatlantic gem trade and its growth into a global industry. During the late nineteenth century, tens of thousands of diggers, prospectors, merchants, and dealers extracted and shipped over 50 million carats of diamonds from South Africa to London. The primary supplier to the world, South Africa's diamond fields became one of the formative sites of modern capitalist production. At each stage of the diamond's route through the British empire and beyond-from Cape Town to London, from Amsterdam to New York City-carbon gems were primarily mined, processed,...

Ecological Restoration of Aquatic and Semi-Aquatic Ecosystems in the Netherlands (NW Europe)

This work presents the state of the art of aquatic and semi-aquatic ecological restoration projects in The Netherlands. Starting from the conceptual basis of restoration ecology, the successes and failures of hundreds of restoration projects are described. Numerous successful projects are mentioned. In general ecological restoration endeavours greatly benefit from the progressive experience achieved in the course of the years. Failures mainly occur through insufficient application of physical, chemical or ecological principles. Spontaneous colonization by plants and animals, following habitat reconstruction, is preferred. However, sometimes the re-introduction of keystone species (e.g. eelgrass, salmon, beaver) is necessary in case the potential habitats are isolated or fragmented, or if a seed bank is lacking, thus not allowing viable populations to develop. Re-introducing traditional management techniques (e.g. mowing without fertilization, low intensity grazing) is important to rehabilitate the semi-natural and cultural landscapes that are so characteristic for The Netherlands.
