Treatment of Addiction is a lively exploration of the growing use of creative arts therapies as a treatment for drug and alcohol dependency. Current treatment options for drug and alcohol addiction vary widely and have in the past been somewhat fragmented. In this book, contributors quote recent research and clinical case studies to argue that the arts therapies offer an appropriate, effective and coherent treatment approach. They explore in detail the practice of film, art, dance and drama therapies in both individual and group settings. Treatment of Addiction is an unusual collection which challenges professionals working with drug and alcohol addiction to think about difficult treatment issues and how other professions approach them. For art therapists in practice, it will provide a lively account of a new application for their growing profession.

Roads

Roads matter to people. This claim is central to the work of Penny Harvey and Hannah Knox, who in this book use the example of highway building in South America to explore what large public infrastructural projects can tell us about contemporary state formation, social relations, and emerging political economies.Roads focuses on two main sites: the interoceanic highway currently under construction between Brazil and Peru, a major public/private collaboration that is being realized within new, internationally ratified regulatory standards; and a recently completed one-hundred-kilometer stretch of highway between Iquitos, the largest city in the Peruvian Amazon, and a small town called Nauta, ...

Thinking Like a Climate

Thinking Like a Climate

In Thinking Like a Climate Hannah Knox confronts the challenges that climate change poses to knowledge production and modern politics. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork among policy makers, politicians, activists, scholars, and the public in Manchester, England—birthplace of the Industrial Revolution—Knox explores the city's strategies for understanding and responding to deteriorating environmental conditions. Climate science, Knox argues, frames climate change as a very particular kind of social problem that confronts the limits of administrative and bureaucratic techniques of knowing people, places, and things. Exceeding these limits requires forging new modes of relating to climate in ways that reimagine the social in climatological terms. Knox contends that the day-to-day work of crafting and implementing climate policy and translating climate knowledge into the work of governance demonstrates that local responses to climate change can be scaled up to effect change on a global scale.

This work covers Bronson’s entire output in film and on television, and includes many film stills and photographs. Alphabetical entries list film or episode, complete cast and credits, and year of release. Accompanying each entry’s plot synopsis and discussion is a survey of the critical responses to the work. The great Charles Laughton once said Bronson “has the strongest face in the business, and he is also one of its best actors.” Pretty high praise for an actor who, though loved by fans worldwide, has been consistently underestimated by critics. Bronson’s career has spanned five decades, from such television appearances in The Fugitive, Rawhide, Bonanza and Have Gun, Will Travel as well as the telemovie A Family of Cops (1995) and its two sequels. He will long be remembered for his role as urban vigilante Paul Kersey in the Death Wish films. Bronson is one of the most enigmatic, and also most recognizable, of all film stars.
