Glacier Systems and Seasonal Snow Cover in Six Major Asian River Basins
The hydrological roles of glaciers and seasonal snow in the Indus, Ganges, Brahmaputra, Amu Darya, Syr Darya and Mekong basins are, for the first time, assessed comprehensively at a major river basin scale in this paper. Contribution of glacier runoff, subdivided into renewable and nonrenewable components, and seasonal snowmelt to mean annual flow is evaluated for two time slices: 1961-1990 and 2001-2010. The recent changes of the hydrological roles of glaciers and snow, and the most likely changes of those under future climate change are analyzed.
Beautiful Floods
Floods are generally perceived as natural hazards. This book, in contrast, portrays the 'beautiful floods' of the Mekong Delta, which annually constitute a substantial resource for people's rural livelihoods. With a focus on floods, the book employs a 'lifeworlds' analysis to investigate dynamics of environmental and livelihood knowledge among farming and fishing communities, and it demonstrates that rapid agrarian change has both positive and negative impacts. Aqua-'culture'
"Pangasius" is a genus of shark catfishes native to Asia. The term is often used to refer to the commercially important Pangasius bocourti, or basa fish. In Vietnam, water pollution in Pangasius aquaculture endangers its economic success and meaning for rural development in the Mekong Delta. With the help of Bourdieu's theory of practice, this book considers the interplay of subjective and objective structures on the practices in Pangasius cultivation. It shows that economic dependencies in a global commodity production system have led to a transformation process that most aquaculturists cannot cope with. State-Society Interaction in Vietnam
This book, based on anthropological research on local irrigation management in the Mekong Delta, sheds light on state-society interactions at the interface between bureaucratic and informal areas. Data from ethnographic case studies was framed abductively by an institutional bricolage approach (Cleaver 2012) and state power (Goebel 2011). The study goes beyond an institutions process and individual bargaining to argue that local irrigation management is guided by the co-evolution between the state and local actors. Environmental Uncertainty and Local Knowledge
Southeast Asia is a laboratory showing current worldwide ecological issues. Environmental change, natural resource exploitation as well as global climate change increasingly threaten people's livelihoods. Environmentally-based uncertainties foster a high level of knowledge uncertainty. This poses a constantly growing threat to agricultural production. Vulnerable communities with a low degree of resilience are most severely affected. But local communities have abilities to innovate and develop locally embedded coping strategies. The contributors of this volume are most interested in environmental change that fosters knowledge uncertainties. Agricultural Water Storage in an Era of Climate Change: Assessing Need and Effectiveness in Africa
By mitigating the vagaries of climate variability, agricultural water storage is widely anticipated to make a key contribution to climate change adaptation in Africa. However, if the planning of water storage is not improved, it is likely that many investments will fail to fully deliver intended benefits. This report describes the agricultural water storage continuum and some of the possible implications of climate change. A simple diagnostic tool which can be used to provide a rapid evaluation of the need and effectiveness of different water storage options, under existing and possible future climate conditions, is presented.
