Beyond the Knowledge Trap
Based on the success of the World Scientific publication OC Governing and Managing KnowledgeOCO edited by Thomas Menkhoff, Hans-Dieter Evers and Chay Yue Wah in 2005, this unique volume presents 16 new theoretical-practical papers on the strategic aspects of developing knowledge-based economies with case studies from South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Philippines and Uzbekistan. Marketing and Market Queens
This book analyzes how global, regional, and national trade policies have influenced the domestic agricultural food market in Ghana. Through a detailed investigation of the tomato sector in the Upper East Region, a theoretical analysis of risks, power, and the moral market shows a complex market structure dominated by powerful tomato market queens who control the market. Empirical evidence reveals a market chain captured by local actors at various levels who, in an attempt to protect their position, exhibit a moral obligation towards traders by assisting them to buy at cheap prices at the farm gate. At a higher level, the book presents challenges confronting Ghanaian tomato farmers as they are faced with a flooding of the domestic market with tomato paste from European countries and a weak processing sector. Unravelling Migrants as Transnational Agents of Development
Since the early 2000s, there has been an increased interest in international migration as a central mechanism to advance what is called the development potential of international migrants. The contributions in this book argue that the current enthusiasm about the migration-development nexus should be approached from a perspective that recognizes and critically appraises the emergence of a new agent in development discourse, variably called "migrants," "diaspora," or "transnational community." Floods and Farmers
The Mekong Delta of Vietnam is extremely vulnerable to floods and, therefore, the establishment of dike systems is generally considered an appropriate approach to flood control. Based on intensive field work in the heart of the Delta, this dissertation investigates current dike planning practices, as well as its implementation at district and commune levels. The research reveals numerous shortcomings with regard to planning and shows that the dike system also produces adverse negative impacts on the ecosystems and livelihoods. Dissertation. Translocality
This volume discusses globalising processes from the perspective of the humanities and social sciences. It focuses on the ‘global south’, notably the Middle East, Asia, and Africa. Densely researched case studies examine a variety of approaches for their potential to understand connecting processes on different scales. The studies seek to overcome the main traps of the ‘globalisation’ paradigm, such as its occidental bias, its notion of linear expansion, its simplifying dichotomy between ‘local’ and ‘global’, and an often-found lack of historical depth. They elaborate the asymmetries, mobilities, opportunities and barriers involved in globalising processes. Their new perspective on these processes is captured by the concept of ‘translocality’, which aims at integrating a variety of theoretical and methodological approaches from different disciplines.
Environmental Uncertainty and Local Knowledge
Southeast Asia is a laboratory showing current worldwide ecological issues. Environmental change, natural resource exploitation as well as global climate change increasingly threaten people's livelihoods. Environmentally-based uncertainties foster a high level of knowledge uncertainty. This poses a constantly growing threat to agricultural production. Vulnerable communities with a low degree of resilience are most severely affected. But local communities have abilities to innovate and develop locally embedded coping strategies. The contributors of this volume are most interested in environmental change that fosters knowledge uncertainties. Regions discussed include the Mekong Delta in Vietnam, Moluccas, Central Kalimantan, West Sumatra and South Sulawesi in Indonesia and Tangail Region in Bangladesh.
Rules, Norms and NGO Advocacy Strategies
There is much controversy over the development of new dams for hydropower, where concerns for environmental protection and the livelihoods of local people may conflict with the goals of economic development.
