This work focuses on some common land within 3 miles of Oxford City centre known as Port Meadow and Picksey Mead. The wealth of ecological, historical and archaeological information now available for these areas of grassland is thoroughly described. A section deals with the history of the control or management of the upper reaches of the River Thames and the adjacent grassland, while the third section looks at change in these grassland communities and comparison with other grassland systems in lowland England.
The 52 papers respond to the explosion of the search for and discovery of high redshift galaxies and the application of broad-band photometry to obtain remarkably reliable estimates of the redshifts of galaxies at all redshifts, spurred not only by the Hubble Deep Fields, but also by the advent of wide-field CCDs on ground-based telescopes and the development of sensitive infrared, submillimeter, and millimeter instrumentation. They discuss techniques, findings, and integrating new data into existing models of galaxy formation and evolution.
Recent research in wide-field astronomy is reported in these papers from an August 2000 conference, encompassing theoretical developments as well as innovations in observational instrumentation. Advances in wide-field cosmology and extragalactic astronomy, wide-field galactic astronomy, wide-field planetary astronomy, databases and access, new telescopes and instruments, and new surveys are detailed. There is also material on the wide-field photographic legacy. Some specific topics are the Chandra Multi-wavelength Project, cosmology of the space-luminosity distribution of virialized halos, galaxy formation at high redshifts, the faint sky variability survey, saving astronomical treasures, and searching for NEOs using wide-field telescopes.
