Farmer's Son, Military Career
The book is done, it is published and now it is ready for you to read and enjoy my story. I am happy to share my experience growing up on the plains of South Dakota, completing grade school in a one-room school, surviving blizzards, including getting lost in our yard. I have virtually all positive memories, for example I remember being in severe pain, but I don't remember the pain. I can look back and see points where a different decision by me would have changed my life, but not necessarily better for me. Achieving the highest enlisted grade in the Air Force is in ways the culmination of my military career. This career included service as an electronics technician, combat crew member, military training instructor, and scheduler for aircrews, missile crews, and administrative airlift missions within 5th Air Force, and aircraft operations management. I followed the tradition of my late brother Robert in serving a hitch in the military, 3 years for Robert and 30 years for me and then graduating from college. Of course life went on after the Air Force and I have included pictures throughout the time of my story to help you understand my story.
Vietnam War Through My Eyes
This book contains my views, perceptions, and memories of the Vietnam War. It is the perception of a career Air Force NCO and a high school student with a romanticized view of flying bombing missions with an iconic aircraft from the Second World War. It gives my opinion about the justification of that war-from my military service and the inherent attitude of following orders, to carry out orders to their successful conclusion. I started apathetic until John Kennedy became president. Early in my military career, I was a strong supporter of Kennedy's Vietnam policies. Then as the war progressed, I began questioning my beliefs. Here is where I am now, and how did I get to this point? The answer is, The Vietnam War, Through My Eyes.
Remembering John Kennedy
In memory of John Kennedy, My first memory is that of Senator John Fitzgerald Kennedy at the time of the convention on democracy in July 1956. After the convention, my interest in politics resumed for me. My second memory is of him as a candidate for the Democratic nomination for the presidency. It seemed to be a breath of fresh air compared to the national figures I had seen on television, which I had read a lot in the newspapers. I was excited and proud of my party and inspired by this man who, in my opinion, would be the next president and my new commander-in-chief. His death was truly one of the most memorable moments of my life, but his inspiration still lives in me.
