Dynamics of Islam in the Modern World scrutinizes and analyzes Islam in context. It posits Muslims not as independent and autonomous, but as relational and interactive agents of change and continuity who interplay with Islamic(ate) sources of self and society as well as with resources from other traditions. Representing multiple disciplinary approaches, the contributors to this volume discuss a broad range of issues, such as secularization, colonialism, globalization, radicalism, human rights, migration, hermeneutics, mysticism, religious normativity and pluralism, while paying special attention to three geographical settings of South Asia, the Middle East and Euro-America.

What is it like to be young and religious in migration society? This volume presents research at the intersection of religion, age and race. The chapters' foci range from methodological challenges to conceptual work and empirical case studies. The authors present research on various religious traditions including contributions on young Alevis, Hindus, Buddhists and Muslims, and apply an array of theoretical angles among them feminist, post- and de-colonial perspectives. Furthermore, the volume engages in the debate over novel conceptual frameworks attuned to investigate contemporary manifestations of youth religiosity, for example in digital spaces. Laura Dickmann-Kacskovics zeichnet auf Basis narrativer Interviews mit Anhängerinnen des Salafismus einzelne Lebensgeschichten sowie Handlungs- und Orientierungsmuster junger Salafitinnen nach. Ihre Erkenntnisse über die Hinwendungsprozesse zum Fundamentalismus bieten eine empirisch fundierte Grundlage, auf der geschlechterspezifische Angebote der Prävention und Distanzierung vom (gewaltlegitimierenden) Salafismus entwickelt werden können.
In seiner empirisch fundierten Studie untersucht Stefan E. Hößl Zusammenhänge zwischen Antisemitismus und Religiösem bei Jugendlichen, die sich als Musliminnen und Muslime definieren. Der Autor lässt eine rekonstruktive Analysehaltung zum Tragen kommen und fragt dabei, inwiefern Religiöses – fernab einer bloßen religiösen Selbstverortung der Jugendlichen – in ihrem Denken und Wahrnehmen einen Niederschlag findet. The fifth issue of the Interdisciplinary Journal for Religion and Transformation in Contemporary Society (J-RaT) centers on the topic of religion, transformation and sex/gender. The focal point will be on religious and cultural transformation processes and their repercussions on gender roles, constructs and representations on the one hand, and on sex and/or gender transformations which are embedded in the context of specific religious traditions on the other. Transformation is understood here as change, alteration and reformatting. The multifaceted connections between religion, transformation and sex/gender are concretized in an abundance of material and symbolic phenomena and are examined starting from different subject-specific and methodical approaches.
