Sustainable Architectures
As buildings are responsible for fifty per cent of CO2 emissions, their design has become the focus of intense technical scrutiny. Knowing how to build more technically efficient, or ecologically responsible, buildings, and being able to assemble the social resources to do so, requires different forms of knowledge and practice. There is wide contestation over the optimal pathways to greener buildings design and great diversity in practices of sustainable architecture. This volume brings together leading researchers from across the European Union and North America both to illustrate the diversity of practice and to provide a critical commentary on this key debate. The reader is provided with an introduction to competing perspectives on the sustainable architecture debate, international exemplars of differing practice and an overview of new theoretical and methodological resources for understanding and meeting the conceptual, social and technical challenges of sustainable architecture.
Saltwater Flyfishing
Saltwater flyfishermen from all over northern Europe contribute information on methods, places and patterns for catching saltwater fish on the fly. Species covered include salmon, sea-trout, bass, pollack & coalfish, mullet, garfish, flatties and cod; and the area covered is from north Norway to southern Ireland. The contributors include Mike Ladle on bass and mullet, Stan Headley on Orkney sea-trout and many European experts from Norwegian cod to Baltic sea-trout. Included are extracts from the existing literature on saltwater flyfishing by John Bickerdyke, Fred Aflalo, Sidney Spencer, Stephen Johnson and others. Extensive bibliographies of sea-trout and of saltwater flyfishing are included. The first edition had a dark blue dust-wrapper. The book was reprinted in 2006 and 2012 with minor revisions (changed telephone numbers, website addresses, etc.) and was produced with a light blue dust-wrapper. Life in the Cold
This book contains the proceedings of the 11 'h international symposium dedicated to the understanding of animal "Life in the Cold", held at Jungholz (Austria), August 13-18, 2000. In 55 chapters contributed by researchers from 16 countries the current state of knowledge is reviewed, and the most recent developments and discussions in this field are highlighted. The first symposium on hibernation and life in the cold was held in 1959, and from then on they continued to occur every 3-5 years. The regular occurrence of these meetings became almost a tradition. A tradition which is entirely based on the enthusiasm of participants, and was nourished by scientific progress in this area during the past decades. The first symposium in 1959 was organised by Charles P. Lyman and Albert R. Dawe and was almost entirely dedicated to hibernation and torpor. This has been a backbone topic of the following symposia, although other aspects of animal energetics, thermal physiology and biochemistry were included in later meetings.
