The Great British Bobby

The name 'Bobby' comes from Sir Robert Peel who, as home secretary, oversaw the creation of the Metropolitan Police in 1829. In spite of his position as a national institution and his appeal as a solution to present-day concerns about law and order, the social history of the Bobby has rarely been explored. Yet his story (and since the beginning of the twentieth century it is also her story) is as exciting as that of his military cousin, Tommy Atkins. Bobby served on the front line of what is often characterized as 'the war against crime.' He may rarely have fought in pitched battles and almost never with lethal weapons, but his life could be hard and dangerous. Up until the last third of the...

Clive

Robert Clive (1725–1774), later Baron Clive of Plassey, is widely considered the founder of British India. He arrived in Madras as a clerk for the East India Company in 1744. Through timely promotion and a clear affinity for military leadership, he proceeded to consolidate the company's commercial and territorial position in South India before doing the same in the northeast in Bengal. In 1757 company troops under his command defeated the Nawab of Bengal at the Battle of Plassey. This victory set in motion the East India Company's ascendancy over much of India and eventual development into the world's largest transnational trading company at the time. This paved the way for the 1857 creati...

The real-life story of Robert Clive would be judged as wildly implausible if it came from the pen of a novelist. Clive of India was one of the most extraordinary and colorful figures Britain ever produced. The founder of Britain's Indian empire, he was also Britain's first great guerrilla fighter by the age of twenty-seven, conqueror of Bengal at thirty-one, and avenging angel of righteousness against the greed of his own fellow-countrymen at forty-one. In his later life Parliament brought him under painful scrutiny and he ended up one of the most hated men in Britain. He died violently under still-mysterious circumstances just before his fiftieth birthday. The story of Clive can be viewed o...

Visions of Heaven and Hell

When the wicked have traveled a course of sin, and discover they have reason to fear the God;s judgement and wrath for their sins, they begin to wish there is no God to punish them, then by degrees they persuade themselves there is no God, and then they set themselves to study the arguments to support their opinion. This excellent book by John Bunyan covers the subject matter of the existence of heaven and hell as well as studies and dispells the arguments presented by sinners who argue there is no heaven and hell. Most do not know that Bunyan wrote some 60 books, and poetry too. And also almost a well-kept secret is that his doctrine was so biblically laced that many good men would call him...

It is now well established that laser flow-measuring systems have important advantages over more conventional techniques both for industrial and laboratory applications. These fundamental advantages are indicated by the enormous research effort which has gone into their development over the last decade and by the number of commercial systems which have become available. Although the field is still developing, the most important theoretical results required for relating the system outputs to the fluid flow parameters have now been formulated and a book on the subject therefore seems timely. In the text we have tried to collect together the most important results both from our own papers and f...
