Coccidioidomycosis

The idea for compiling a book on coccidioidomycosis first began to take shape in my mind in 1976 at an annual meeting of the Coccidioidomycosis Study Group (see Chapter 23) in Palo Alto. In my discussions with the chairman, Demosthenes Pappagianis, we agreed that considerable data had accumulated in the almost 20 years since the publication of Marshall Fiese's landmark book, Coccidioidomycosis (Charles C Thomas, Spring field, Ill. , 1958). Pappagianis encouraged me to consider writing a new book. Also about this time, my Stanford colleague Tom Merigan was collaborating in assembling a series of texts on infectious diseases, and he added his encouragement to that of Pappagianis. This book is open access under a CC BY license. The narrative of 20th-century medicine is the conquering of acute infectious diseases and the rise in chronic, degenerative diseases. The history of fungal infections does not fit this picture. This book charts the path of fungal infections from the mid 19th century to the dawn of the 21st century.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Human Mycoses

Diagnosis and Treatment of Human Mycoses brings together globally-recognized mycoses experts to guide readers in the use of current knowledge in the field of medical mycology to manage those who suffer from fungal infections (mycoses). Often, diagnostic strategies and tests, including basic and directed culturing techniques, histopathology with standard and special stains, serological methods, and radiological studies all need to be considered and commonly combined to make the diagnosis of fungal infection. This volume first introduces and reviews these tools separately and then as they pertain to specific infections or groups of diseases. The volume consists of four parts. Parts I-III provide an overview of diagnostic and therapeutic tools, and part IV presents the human mycoses. Diagnosis and Treatment of Human Mycoses is meant to be a concise text that will provide the busy infectious disease, hematology–oncology, pulmonology, or critical care specialist a practical tool to diagnose and manage fungal infections. In addition, the depth of the material in the text will provide these and other medical specialists and trainees an excellent reference and learning resource.

Because of limited access to medical libraries and medical journals, the majority of clinicians may find it difficult to keep informed on the latest developments in drug manufacture and treatment of infectious diseases in immunocompromised patients. This new handbook strives to fulfill the need for information in this area of medicine. This is the first book on drug development and treatment of infectious diseases in immunocompromised hosts. It integrates both results from large-scale clinical trials and single cases as well as small groups of patients. It covers bacterial, viral, parasitic, and fungal infections, including a wide array of diseases. Infectious Diseases in Immunocompromised Hosts encompasses not only opportunistic infections associated exclusively with immunocompromised patients, but also common infections that become life-threatening for immunosuppressed individuals.
