Africa and the Challenges of the Twenty-first Century
The Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa, CODESRIA, held its 13th General Assembly, 5-9 December 2011, in Rabat Morocco. The theme of the scientific conference was: “Africa and the Challenges of the Twenty-first Century”. Some of the reasons that influenced the choice of this theme were to do with how Africa should position itself in the new global political and economic order in the context of an increasingly complex neoliberal globalisation. Changes in intercultural relations at the global level, climate change, poverty, rapid urbanisation, the ICTs revolution, the emergence of a multi-polar world and the phenomenon of emerging powers of the South are some of the realities of our world that are widely and extensively discussed by both academics and policy-makers. This book contains the statutory lectures of the 13th General Assembly. Each one speaks to major challenges that Africa and the Global South are facing in this second decade of the Twenty first Century: neoliberal globalisation, capital flight, the land question, gender relations, with a particular focus on matriarchy; and universalism.

Women in Academia
The struggle for gender equality within academic life continues to meet strong resistance and African campuses are no exception. In the one area where women should be able to command respect and equality, the day-to-day reality of female academics is one of antagonism, difficulty and even physical and mental harassment. Academic freedom in Africa has attracted much recent attention. But few examinations of the subject have incorporated a gender analysis. Drawing on the experiences of women from Cameroon, Egypt, Malawi, Mauritania, Nigeria, Senegal, Tanzania, and Uganda, this ground-breaking book examines in detail the realities of academic life. Choice in curricula, underfunding, promotion, relations with other staff and pay conditions are just a few of the critical issues explored.

Men, Women, and Violence
Gender based violence is alarmingly widespread across cultures. Research is in its initial stages in Africa, with few statistics and resources. There is, too, little relevant legislation. This selection ofpapers from the 1997 CODESRIA Gender Institute gathering which included participants from eight African countries. The six contributors highlight how universal attitudes of male dominance and patriarchy can literally engender aculture of violence in which women and children are the victims. Case studies from East and West Africa are included.
