It is a golden time for Earth and the Sol Alliance. Peace reigns supreme. The MEKON, perhaps mankind’s greatest enemy, has finally been vanquished and is undergoing behavioural treatment in a maximum-security prison built on the Moon. Yet the one man responsible for the capture of the Mekon, the legendary space pilot DAN DARE, languishes in a prison of his own making. With no foe to fight, battle to win or day to be saved, Dan finds himself shackled by the chains of normality and boredom. In a silent prayer, Dan begs the universe to give him a reason to take flight again to the stars. And his prayers have seemingly been answered. From an unchartered sector of the galaxy an ancient spaceship of unknown origin and purpose has arrived, broadcasting a strange, un-decipherable signal – and stated its intent by destroying one of the moons of Saturn in a colossal show of strength and firepower…

A new idea can become an expensive flop for TV executives. So from the earliest days of television, the concept of a pilot episode seemed like a good idea. Trying out new actors; new situations and new concepts before making a series was good economical sense. It was also tax deductible. Sometimes these pilots were shown on television; sometimes they were so awful they were hidden from sight in archives; and sometimes they were excellent one-offs, but a series seemed elusive and never materialised. Chris Perry has always been fascinated by the pilot episode. So many pilots are made annually, but never seen by audiences. Only a handful appear on screen. It's a hidden world of comedy, variety, drama and factual programming. This volume attempts to lift the lid on the world of the TV pilot by revealing the many transmitted and untransmitted episodes made through the decades.

For over ten years, thanks to the tireless endeavors of Space Fleet pilots like the heroic Colonel Daniel McGregor Dare – known as Dan Dare to his friends – the Sol System, home to the Earth Alliance of planets, has prospered and grown, with countless threats both alien and terrestrial met and vanquished. However, for as long as Space Fleet has existed, so too has the Mekon. This artificially-created alien super-intellect from the planet Venus has dedicated his very existence to enslaving the Sol system. Yet despite countless attempts to do so, he never succeeded, thanks to the tireless actions of Dan Dare and his allies: right-hand man and engineer, Albert Fitzwilliam Digby, known simply as Digby; special Space Fleet Science Advisor Professor Jocelyn Peabody; and test pilot Hank Hogan, to name but a few. The Mekon’s last attempt ended in failure and left the evil Treen genius captured and incarcerated on the Moon, undergoing extensive rehabilitation. Since then, a period of peace has reigned throughout the Sol System, and utopia finally seems to be achievable. But peace comes at a price…
