In 1930 verscheen de roman 'Het fregatschip' Johanna Maria van Arthur van Schendel (1874-1946), die gaat over de levenslange liefde van een zeeman voor een zeilschip.0Van Schendels 'Herinneringen van een domme jongen' verscheen vier jaar later. Het is een bundel sprookjesachtige verhalen, waarin een bonte stoet personages tot leven komt, zoals de domme jongen die een dromer was.0Van Schendel schreef zijn werk met de hand. Eerst in potlood op kleine blocnootjes, daarna volgde een netversie met pen en inkt op grotere vellen, die als kopij naar de drukker gingen om in lood gezet te worden. Opvallend is hoe weinig veranderingen hij in de tekst aanbracht.0De handschriften van deze twee boeken zijn onlangs door de familie Van Schendel overgedragen aan het Literatuurmuseum. Ze laten in de kleinste details zien hoe de schrijver Arthur van Schendel zijn boeken schreef.
