This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-conference proceedings of the Second International Conference on Agents and Artificial Intelligence, ICAART 2010, held in Valencia, Spain, in January 2010. The 17 revised full papers presented together with an invited paper were carefully reviewed and selected from 364 submissions. Same as the conference the papers are organized in two simultaneous tracks: Artificial Intelligence and Agents. The selected papers reflect the interdisciplinary nature of the conference. The diversity of topics is an important feature of this conference, enabling an overall perception of several important scientific and technological trends.

The Words of Robotics

The Words of Robotics addresses how the way we “tell” stories about robots cannot be reduced to a strictly logical discourse, but must involve the rhetorical aspects of “ethos” and “pathos.” The author focuses on the aspect of motion in order to analyze the relation between humans and robots, and show the opportunities and pitfalls of the popularization of academic discourses in using a rhetorical approach to talk about robots. This approach allows one to go beyond the reductionisms of either overstating the abilities and power of the robots or reducing the discourse to a specialized, mere technical language.

Transient Stability of Power Systems

The market liberalization is expected to affect drastically the operation of power systems, which under economical pressure and increasing amount of transactions are being operated much closer to their limits than previously. These changes put the system operators faced with rather different and much more problematic scenarios than in the past. They have now to calculate available transfer capabilities and manage congestion problems in a near on line environment, while operating the transmission system under extremely stressed conditions. This requires highly reliable and efficient software aids, which today are non-existent, or not yet in use. One of the most problematic issues, very much needed but not yet en countered today, is on-line dynamic security assessment and control, enabling the power system to withstand unexpected contingencies without experienc ing voltage or transient instabilities. This monograph is devoted to a unified approach to transient stability assessment and control, called SIngle Machine Equivalent (S1ME).

Welcome to my new book called AI Fundamentals Explained. My name is Brian Mackay and I have worked in the IT industry since 1997 when I started at BT Internet helpdesk in my home town of Thurso, in the county of Caithness on the north coast of Scotland. I then went on to work at BT Global Services, Nildram in Buckinghamshire, England, then I moved to Edinburgh, Scotland where I worked for Scottish and Newcastle UK the Heineken UK, NHS Quality Improvement Scotland, NHS Lothian, Bodycote Plc and BSKYB service desk. I passed my Masters in Cybersecurity from Edinburgh Napier University in 2019 and now work as a Cybersecurity consultant for The Scotcoin Project CIC. This book starts off by looking at the early days of AI and machine learning and moves on to the various types of AI today such as, what are LLM's, what is ethical AI, AI legislation, Chat GPT and what is Generative AI, how AI will benefit and be a challenge to the cybersecurity industry, then finally looks at the potential future of AI such as quantum AI.

Consumers today expect extremely realistic imagery generated in real time for interactive applications such as computer games, virtual prototyping, and scientific visualisation. However, the increasing demands for fidelity coupled with rapid advances in hardware architecture pose a challenge: how do you find optimal, sustainable solutions to accommodate both speed of rendering and quality? Real-Time Rendering: Computer Graphics with Control Engineering presents a novel framework for solving the perennial challenge of resource allocation and the trade-off between quality and speed in interactive computer graphics rendering. Conventional approaches are mainly based on heuristics and algorithms...

Distributed controller design is generally a challenging task, especially for multi-agent systems with complex dynamics, due to the interconnected effect of the agent dynamics, the interaction graph among agents, and the cooperative control laws. Cooperative Control of Multi-Agent Systems: A Consensus Region Approach offers a systematic framework for designing distributed controllers for multi-agent systems with general linear agent dynamics, linear agent dynamics with uncertainties, and Lipschitz nonlinear agent dynamics. Beginning with an introduction to cooperative control and graph theory, this monograph: Explores the consensus control problem for continuous-time and discrete-time linear...

The main focus of this monograph will be on the Enhanced Anti-Disturbance Control and filtering theory and their applications. In fact, the classical anti-disturbance control theory only considered one "equivalent" disturbance which is merged by different unknown sources. However, it is noted that along with the development of information obtaining and processing technologies, one can get more information or knowledge about various types of disturbances.

Power Quality Enhancement Using Custom Power Devices

Power Quality Enhancement Using Custom Power Devices considers the structure, control and performance of series compensating DVR, the shunt DSTATCOM and the shunt with series UPQC for power quality improvement in electricity distribution. Also addressed are other power electronic devices for improving power quality in Solid State Transfer Switches and Fault Current Limiters. Applications for these technologies as they relate to compensating busses supplied by a weak line and for distributed generation connections in rural networks, are included. In depth treatment of inverters to achieve voltage support, voltage balancing, harmonic suppression and transient suppression in realistic network environments are also covered. New material on the potential for shunt and series compensation which emphasizes the importance of control design has been introduced.

This pioneering volume has been updated and enriched to reflect the state-of-the-art in blackout prediction and prevention. It documents and explains background and algorithmic aspects of the most successful steady-state, transient and voltage stability solutions available today in real-time. It also describes new, cutting-edge stability applications of synchrophasor technology, and captures industry acceptance of metrics and visualization tools that quantify and monitor the distance to instability. Expert contributors review a broad spectrum of additionally available techniques, such as trajectory sensitivities, ensuring this volume remains the definitive resource for industry practitioners and academic researchers in this critical area of power system operations.

Establishing adaptive control as an alternative framework to design and analyze Internet congestion controllers, End-to-End Adaptive Congestion Control in TCP/IP Networks employs a rigorously mathematical approach coupled with a lucid writing style to provide extensive background and introductory material on dynamic systems stability and neural network approximation; alongside future internet requests for congestion control architectures. Designed to operate under extreme heterogeneous, dynamic, and time-varying network conditions, the developed controllers must also handle network modeling structural uncertainties and uncontrolled traffic flows acting as external perturbations. The book als...
