Stage Management

This popular book describes in detail a stage manager's job. It provides students, those just starting out in the profession and amateurs with a solid grounding in theatre stage management practices and procedures. The disciplines of lighting, set design and sound are discussed but the book's main concern is with the management of these elements and with the processes and scheduling that go together to provide the effective results. The author demonstrates that the methods used are as important as the final result. Chronologically following the production of a play, the book starts with pre-production planning and progresses to the first night.

Fashioning James Bond

Fashioning James Bond is the first book to study the costumes and fashions of the James Bond movie franchise, from Sean Connery in 1962's Dr No to Daniel Craig in Spectre (2015). Llewella Chapman draws on original archival research, close analysis of the costumes and fashion brands featured in the Bond films, interviews with families of tailors and shirt-makers who assisted in creating the 'look' of James Bond, and considers marketing strategies for the films and tie-in merchandise that promoted the idea of an aspirational 'James Bond lifestyle'. Addressing each Bond film in turn, Chapman questions why costumes are an important tool for analysing and evaluating film, both in terms of the dev...

Hegel's Theory of Madness

This book shows how an understanding of the nature and role of insanity in Hegel's writing provides intriguing new points of access to many of the central themes of his larger philosophic project. Berthold-Bond situates Hegel's theory of madness within the history of psychiatric practice during the great reform period at the turn of the eighteenth century, and shows how Hegel developed a middle path between the stridently opposed camps of "empirical" and "romantic" medicine, and of "somatic" and "psychical" practitioners. A key point of the book is to show that Hegel does not conceive of madness and health as strictly opposing states, but as kindred phenomena sharing many of the same underlying mental structures and strategies, so that the ontologies of insanity and rationality involve a mutually illuminating, mirroring relation. Hegel's theory is tested against the critiques of the institution of psychiatry and the very concept of madness by such influential twentieth-century authors as Michel Foucault and Thomas Szasz, and defended as offering a genuinely reconciling position in the contemporary debate between the "social labeling" and "medical" models of mental illness.

The clock struck 8 PM-a time when the world seemed to hold its breath, when the veil between light and darkness grew thin. Curiosity got the better of her as she read the cryptic message-a clandestine invitation to a meeting that would unravel the secrets of her past. Intrigued and plagued by unanswered questions about her long-lost brother, Daniel, she made the fateful decision to attend, unaware that her life was about to take a treacherous turn. Little did Rebecca know that the meeting would lead h...

Pickett's Charge

At Gettysburg on July 3, 1863, Confederate soldiers launched one of history's most famous infantry assaults: Pickett's Charge. Using the participants' own words, Richard Rollins deftly reconstructs that momentous event. Separate sections cover planning and preparation; the preliminary artillery barrage; the charges of Pickett's, Pettigrew's, and Trimble's Divisions; and defensive actions up and down the Federal line. From the generals who devised the assault to the lower-level officers and men who bravely walked through shell and shot, Rollins offers a comprehensive, panoramic view of the charge, with more than 150 firsthand accounts—including accounts from Lee, Longstreet, Pickett, Meade, and Hancock—many of them long forgotten and previously unpublished.
