Protein-Protein Interactions

This detailed volume provides a comprehensive collection of classic and cutting-edge methods and techniques in mapping protein-protein interactions. The chapters include a variety of in vitro and in vivo experimental methods covering cell biology, biochemistry, and biophysics. In addition, the book also explores in silico methods including sequence-, structure-, and phylogenetic profile-based approaches as well as gene expression and machine learning methods. Written for the highly successful Methods in Molecular Biology series, chapters include introductions to their respective topics, lists of the necessary materials and reagents, step-by-step and readily reproducible laboratory protocols, as well as tips on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls. Authoritative and practical, Protein-Protein Interactions: Methods and Protocols serves as an ideal guide for researchers working in protein science and beyond.

Ubiquitin

The ubiquitin-proteasome pathway consists of ubiquitin, substrate proteins, E1 enzymes, E2 enzymes, E3 enzymes, and proteasome, which acts in a series of enzymatic reaction chains to ubiquitinate substrate proteins such as surplus and misfolded proteins for degradation by the proteasome to maintain the balance between protein synthesis and degradation in a cell and tissue. Moreover, deubiquitinating enzymes can remove the attached ubiquitin chain, which results in a reverse ubiquitination-deubiquitination process involved in multiple biological processes in a cell and tissue. The changes of components in the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway are associated with multiple pathophysiological processes, such as cancers and neurodegenerative diseases. This book presents the new advances in concepts, analytical methodology, and application of ubiquitin-proteasome pathway for clarification of molecular mechanisms and discovery of new therapeutic targets and drugs in different diseases.

So Far from God

"So Far from God" is the story of a recent journey that began in Spain and took Patrick Marnham from California through the ruined countries to the south where the word 'America’ was first used. Marnham set out to visit those small countries that lie between them and Mexico -- Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua -- where all the trouble occurs. With humor, compassion, and a mercilessly clear eye he portrays the people and predicaments he encountered on a fascinating and frequently dangerous journey. Marnham’s adventures are judiciously and eloquently seasoned with up-to-the-minute politics and historical background. "So Far from God" is a shrewd and provocative view of the political culture of Central Americans -- and of their fearful yearning attitude toward their northern neighbor. -- From publisher's description.

Hyperborder

Roving vigilantes, fear-mongering politicians, hysterical pundits, and the looming shadow of a seven hundred-mile-long fence: the US–Mexican border is one of the most complex and dynamic areas on the planet today. Hyperborder provides the most nuanced portrait yet of this dynamic region. Author Fernando Romero presents a multidisciplinary perspective informed by interviews with numerous academics, researchers, and organizations. Provocatively designed in the style of other kinetic large-scale studies like Rem Koolhaas's Content and Bruce Mau’s Massive Change, Hyperborder is an exhaustively researched report from the front lines of the border debate.
