The Ancient Egyptian Books of the Afterlife
This volume offers a survey about what is known about the Ancient Egyptians' vision of the afterlife and an examination of these beliefs that were written down in books that were later discovered in royal tombs. The contents of the texts range from the collection of spells in the Book of the Dead, which was intended to offer practical assistance on the journey to the afterlife, to the detailed accounts of the hereafter provided in the Books of the Netherworld. The author looks closely at these latter works, while summarizing the contents of the Book of the Dead and other widely studied examples of the genre. For each composition, he discusses the history of its ancient transmission and its decipherment in modern times, supplying bibliographic information for any text editions. He also seeks to determine whether this literature as a whole presents a monolithic conception of the afterlife. The volume features many drawings from the books themselves.
Ancient Egyptian Chronology
This volume deals with the chronology of Ancient Egypt from the fourth millennium until the Hellenistic Period. An initial section reviews the foundations of Egyptian chronology, both ancient and modern, from annals and kinglists to C14 analyses of archaeological data. Specialists discuss sources, compile lists of known dates, and analyze biographical information in the section devoted to relative chronology. The editors are responsible for the final section which attempts a synthesis of the entire range of available data to arrive at alternative absolute chronologies. The prospective readership includes specialists in Near Eastern and Aegean studies as well as Egyptologists.
St. Lawrence University
Founded in 1856, St. Lawrence University is the oldest continuously coeducational institution of higher learning in New York State. Today, it offers a four-year undergraduate program of study in the liberal arts and enrolls approximately 2,000 students. St. Lawrence University looks back at a history that includes industry pioneers, government leaders, a law school, Madame Curie, the SS St. Lawrence Victory, movie stars, and sports legends. Originally chartered as a Universalist seminary and college of letters and science, St. Lawrence championed progressive ideas such as critical thinking and gender equality. The university of the late 19th century, although austere, offered nonacademic activities, including sports teams, a student government, the first Greek-letter organizations, and organizations for music, drama, social activism, and the literary arts. After weathering the Great Depression and World War II, the university grew dramatically; the four-building campus serving some 300 students in the early 1940s became a 30-building campus within 25 years.

Chemical Signals in Vertebrates
From June 6 to 9, 1976, about 140 participants (physiologists, chemists, ecologists, animal behaviorists, and psychologists) gathered in the Gideon Putnam Hotel at Saratoga Springs, New York for a symposium entitled "Chemical Signals in Vertebrates". The focus of this symposium, sponsored by the United States National Science Foundation, was on chemical communication in higher animals, most notably mammals. This included the chemical nature, production, and reception of chemical signals, and their modulating effects on behavior. Almost all the world's laboratories working in this area were represented. It was the first meeting of its kind, and although the physiological aspects of taste and smell on the one hand and insect pheromones on the other have previously been treated in several fine symposia, they have not before been treated as a back drop to chemical communication in vertebrates. The field of insect pheromones is well developed, with hundreds of active compounds identified. By contrast, in vertebrates only six mammalian phero mones in as many species had been identified chemically by 1976.

The Amateur Cracksman
Arthur J. Raffles is a character created in the 1890s by E. W. Hornung, brother-in-law to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the creator of Sherlock Holmes. Raffles is, in many ways, a deliberate inversion of Holmes - he is a ""gentleman thief,"" living at the Albany, a prestigious address in London, playing cricket for the Gentlemen of England and supporting himself by carrying out ingenious burglaries.
