This book provides a comprehensive analysis of major works in Japanese literature and film through the interpretive lens of trauma and PTSD studies. Focusing critical attention on the psychodynamics and enduring psychosocial aftereffects of social trauma, it also evaluates the themes of dissociation, failed mourning, and psychological defence fantasies. Building on earlier studies, this book emphasizes the role of protagonists in managing to effect partial recovery by composing memoirs in which they transform dissociated traumatic memory into articulate, narrative memory or bring about advanced recovery by pioneering alternative means of orally communicating, working through, and overcoming ...

The Philosopher in the City

After reestablishing the connection between morality and the law, the author develops a coherent position on many of the most controversial issues of urban life: the political uses of the streets; verbal assaults and the defamation of racial groups; the legitimate restriction of public speech; segregation, busing, and the use of racial quotas; education, housing, and the problem of the ghetto"; prostitution, gambling, and the "regulation of vices." This study of a series of artistic representations of the Asia Pacific War experience in a variety of Japanese media is premised on Walter Davis' assertion that traumatic events and experiences must be 'constituted' before they can be assimilated, integrated and understood. Arguing that the contribution of the arts to the constitution, integration and comprehension of traumatic historical events has yet to be sufficiently acknowledged or articulated, the contributors to this volume examine how various Japanese authors and other artists have drawn upon their imaginative powers to create affect-charged forms and images of the extreme violence, psychological damage and ideological contradiction surrounding the War. In so doing, they seek to further the process whereby reading and viewing audiences are encouraged to virtually engage, internalize, 'know' and respond to trauma in concrete, ethical terms.

My Life - Born in Free Tibet, Served in Exile

Tashi Wangdi devoted his life to serve His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan people in their peaceful and nonviolent struggle for truth, justice and freedom. He paints a riveting account of his life, starting with his happy childhood in Tibet, which was shattered in 1959, following the Chinese Communist invasion. After fleeing with his family to India, he was among the initial group of 25 students to be educated at the first school His Holiness established, soon after arriving in India. He dedicated the next 40 years of his life to the Tibetan cause, rising to the top leadership ranks in the Tibetan government in exile, serving as the Minister of 6 different portfolios and also as His Holiness' Representative in New Delhi, New York and Brussels. His detailed and fascinating first-hand account covers many seminal moments in the history of the Tibetan people in exile, including the beginnings of a nascent Tibetan government in exile, its negotiations with the Chinese government, and His Holiness receiving international recognition with the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize, the US Congressional Gold Medal, and Honorary Canadian Citizenship, among others.
