Film As Ethnography
This work examines the reasons why anthropologists have not used the camera as a research instrument or film as a means of communicating ethnographic knowledge. It suggests that images and words in this discipline operate on different logical levels; that they are hierarchically related; that whereas writings may encompass the images produced by film, the inverse of this cannot be true. The author argues for this position further by suggesting that the visual is to the written mode as "thin description" (giving a record of the form of behaviour) is to "thick description" (giving an account of meaning).

In Search of Cool Ground
For many people, flight across an international border occurs repeatedly and is not a uniquely traumatic event. For many more, displacement has occurred within their own countries. The contributors suggest that in situations of such long-term upheaval, notions of flight into refuge and repatriation to a homeland cease to have much meaning. These populations have received minimal assistance from international organizations and have lacked protection from oppressive governments and marauding guerillas. Deadly Developments
Ten anthropologists trace the machinations of war and the effects of violence in capitalist states, from their formation to the present. This collection, the newest volume in the War and Society series, questions the foundations of classical social theory while investigating local and international conflict through the critical and cross-cultural lens of social theory, history, and anthropology. The essays combine to challenge the notion developed by social theorists such as Comte, Spencer, Durkheim, and Engels that war will diminish with the formation and the perpetuation of a capitalist economy and industry. The development of capitalist states, and the nefarious and violent processes which must occur to reproduce capitalism, are rarely realized and then infrequently analyzed. Many western and ethnocentric scholarly representations of war succeed in hiding the deadly developments that occur as a result of capitalist state formation and relations.

World Military History Bibliography
Preclassical and indigenous nonwestern military institutions and methods of warfare are the chief subjects of this annotated bibliography of work published 1967–1997. Classical antiquity, post-Roman Europe, and the westernized armed forces of the 20th century, although covered, receive less systematic attention. Emphasis is on historical studies of military organization and the relationships between military and other social institutions, rather than wars and battles. Especially rich in references to the periodical literature, the bibliography is divided into eight parts: (1) general and comparative topics; (2) the ancient world; (3) Eurasia since antiquity; (4) sub-Saharan Africa and Oceania; (5) pre-Columbian America; (6) postcontact America; (7) the contemporary nonwestern world; and (8) philosophical, social scientific, natural scientific, and other works not primarily historical.
