A guidebook to exploring America's newest national monument in a unique part of Utah. The author discusses the Canyons of the Escalante, Kaiparowits Plateau, and the Grand Staircase in terms of weather conditions, locations and resources available in surrounding towns, Native America history, geologic structure, and its history of European exploration and settlement. Contains maps and many b&w photographs.
The Summit Core (168.8m) was obtained in 2003 during the most recent drilling project headed by Dr. Thompson at Quelccaya (13° 56'S, 70° 50'W, 5670m). The analysis of the 2003 Quelccaya core identifies a strong correlation that extends into the Little Ice Age between Quelccaya [delta]18and NINO 4 Sea Surface Temperatures (r=0.646, p
The primary goal of this study is to reconstruct ENSO (El Nino Southern Oscillation) variability over the past 100-years from ice core and lake level records. Records of accumulation, deuterium excess, and dO18 from the ice core records obtained from Quelccaya (Peru) and Bona-Churchill (Alaska), along with lake elevation data from Crater Lake (Oregon) and Lake Titicaca (Peru) are examined. This work relies on the use of several ENSO proxies from different regions to reconstruct ENSO variability over the past 100 years. Utilizing data from multiple regions is critical as past studies attempting to reconstruct a record of El Nino events from proxy records have encountered two main problems, bo...

This lab guide helps readers learn to make wise choices for sustainability in a finite, changing, and geologically active world. Eighteen exercises cover many current issues in environmental geology and are introduced in four sections. Earth's Materials, Geologic Time, and Geologic Processes; Maps, Aerial Photographs and Satellite Images; Measurements, Basic Calculations and Conversions, and Graphs; Volcanoes, Volcanic Products, and Volcanic Hazards; Hazards of Mount St. Helens; Earthquake Epicenters, Intensities, Risks, Faults, Nonstructural Hazards and Preparation; The Loma Prieta Earthquake of 1989, and Forecasting Earthquakes in the Bay Region; Landslides and Avalanches; Subsidence; River Floods; Coastal Hazards; Groundwater Hydrology; Water Quality Data and Pollution Sources; Lake and River Contamination from Industrial Waste; Groundwater and Surface Water Contamination from Resource Extraction; Groundwater Overdraft and Saltwater Intrusion; Geology and Regional Planning; Global Change and Sustainability. A hands-on reference for anyone who wants to make more informed choices, and review information critically, about the environment.
