Anxieties about foreign invasion were taken so seriously in colonial Sydney that glancing round the Harbour one still sees many reminders of obsolete measures. Its just as well no real enemy put Sydneys big guns and forts to the test. The book quotes many scathing appraisals of their uselessness by contemporary experts. But costly and spectacular ......

Clarke of the Kindur

Transported convict George Clarke absconded in the early 1800s and went far into the then unexplored wilderness of northern New South Wales. There, thought by the Aborigines to be a 'ghost', he lived with them for four years integrating into their lives and later leading them on raids to steal the white men's cattle. On eventual capture he claimed to have crossed the continent and to have discovered a great inland river, the 'Kindur'-a 'desired blessing' of the colonists-which prompted Major Thomas Mitchell's expeditions into the area. This biography traces Clarke's eventful history from his transportation from England in 1824 for robbery, his escape and life with the Kamilaroi Aborigines, his ventures into bushranging, his capture and subsequent imprisonment on Norfolk Island, and death on the public gallows in Van Diemen's Land.

Computers are changing. Soon the silicon chip will seem like a clunky antique amid the bounty of more exotic processes on offer. Robots are changing too; material evolution and swarm intelligence are creating a new generation of devices that will diverge and disperse into a balanced ecosystem of humans and ‘robjects’ (robotic objects). Somewhere in between, we humans will have to change also… in the way we interact with technology, the roles we adopt in an increasingly ‘intelligent’ environment, and how we interface with each other. The driving motors behind many of these changes will be artificial life (A-Life) and unconventional computing. How exactly they will impact on our worl...
