Simultaneous Planning for Disaster Road Clearance and Distribution of Relief Goods
This thesis focuses on disaster management. More specifically, the simultaneous planning of the distribution of disaster relief goods and the clearance of blocked roads immediately after the occurrence of a natural disaster such as an earthquake, a flood or a hurricane is investigated.
Sorting Last-In-First-Out Stacks
This thesis deals with storage systems that are organized in last-in-first-out stacks. This approach for storing items is common, for example, in container terminals, and is therefore of great practical interest as well as high relevance in the literature. Furthermore, optimization problems that may arise in this context are presented and addressed by developing novel mathematical model formulations and customized solution methods.
Cooperative Procurement Problems and Benders Decomposition
In this doctoral thesis a cooperative procurement problem is addressed. The problem considers several aspects from different research streams simultaneously. Namely, elements of lot-sizing, the idea of cooperation as in problems tackled using cooperative game theory, lateral transshipments, which often occur in inventory models, and quantity discounts, which occur in lot-sizing as well as supplier selection problems are brought together. The result of this merge is the development of an integrated problem definition that considers interdependencies between purchasing decisions, quantity discounts, lateral transshipments and inventory holding costs interpreted as cost of capital in order to make smart, cost-effective purchasing decisions for all members of a purchasing alliance. A major contribution of this work is the development of techniques to accelerate classic Benders decomposition, the favoured solution approach. Various acceleration techniques are presented, compared and tested. Thorough numerical studies show the perfomances of the different approaches and examine their competitiveness in comparison to commercial software.

Die Diskussion um den "schlanken Staat" hat die Polizei erreicht. Die Staatsaufgabe Sicherheit gilt nach wie vor als Selbstverständlichkeit; dennoch zieht sich die Polizei aus einzelnen Tätigkeitsfeldern zurück. Daneben boomt der private Sicherheitsmarkt. Diese Entwicklung ist umstritten. Während einige die zunehmende Präsenz privater Ordnungskräfte in der Öffentlichkeit ablehnen, streben andere eine "Police-Private-Partnership" an.Gerhard Nitz stellt zunächst die Privatisierungstendenzen und ihre Diskussion unter Einbeziehung des Forschungsstandes in den USA und Frankreich dar. Sodann werden die verfassungsrechtlichen Grundlagen und die Reichweite der Staatsaufgabe Sicherheit untersucht. Dabei erweisen sich insbesondere die grundrechtlichen Schutzpflichten und Art. 33 Abs. 4 GG als zentrale Garantien eines Systems gestufter staatlicher Verantwortlichkeiten. Konkrete Antworten auf einige der praxisrelevantesten Fragen verdeutlichen Möglichkeiten, Rahmenbedingungen und Grenzen einer Verlagerung polizeilicher Aufgaben auf Private.

Approaches to the Analysis of Production Activity at Archaeological Sites
Proceedings of a workshop held in Berlin, 2018, focusing on manufacturing activities identified at archaeological sites.
