In the current volume, the selected studies have been grouped into three thematic sections, presenting readers with a set of distinct but related research on meaningful issues for a modern learning experience. The first three chapters present professional and teacher development perspectives and collectively shed light on how to develop, maintain, and improve pre and in-service teacher training and professional development. The second set of four chapters provide research findings that describe the results of direct applications of modern learning elements through course assignments and teaching approaches. The final five chapters focus on critical thinking and range in their focus from classroom-based studies to full-scale curriculum reform. The collection of chapters presented in this volume represents the eclectic nature of modern learning experiences and demonstrate its applicability across educational contexts and disciplines. The chapters resonate with other educational researchers in search of novel ways of creating, facilitating, and investigating modern learning experiences.
This volume reports on innovative, useful evaluation work conducted within U.S. college foreign language programs. Each case is reported by program-internal educators, who walk readers through critical steps, from identifying evaluation uses, users, and questions, to designing methods, interpreting findings, and taking actions.
US higher education institutions host more than a million international students, many of whom speak English as a second language (ESL). As this number is projected to grow, it is vital that new curricular and non-curricular approaches to English language development are considered, including rigorous evaluation processes. This book introduces a framework to guide institutions in examining their views and beliefs regarding language acquisition and current approaches to international student success. It makes a distinction between a philosophy of support and a philosophy of development with a focus on the latter. It provides stakeholders with theoretical and practical foundations from which they can design, develop, and implement new models for students’ linguistic and cultural growth. Application of the framework will encourage institutions to examine support models that have been in place for decades and develop effective processes for generating innovative programming and practices aimed at helping international ESL students achieve their educational goals.
Journalism is one of the most important professions today. Without it, large swaths of the world similarly might have remained "dark, impoverished, tortured," because few people would have been aware of the nature and depth of the atrocities therein. You can't fix what you can't find. Indeed, we have only to look at places today where journalists must risk their lives to do their jobs-places such as Central Europe, the Philippines, Mexico, Myanmar, Russia, Turkey, Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Cameroun, Afghanistan, and too many others-to appreciate anew what an incalculable difference the media make, reporting on wars, famines, genocide, and the tyrants who green-light them. But saving the world apparently is not enough. I have included a chapter on Peace Journalism because it uses conflict analysis and transformation to update the concept of balance, fairness and accuracy in reporting. This approach provides a new road map tracing the connections between journalists, their sources, the stories they cover and the consequences of their reporting-the ethics of journalistic intervention to play a role in global peace rather than fuelling conflicts.
