The subject of the workshop was the Gallium Arsenide and related compounds devices for Physics research and applications. The topics were the GaAs detectors for the experimental apparatus, the characterisation of the materials and the detectors, the GaAs electronics and optoelectronics, the radiation hardness and the x-ray detectors for x-ray imaging in medical applications. The purpose of the workshop was to discuss the status of the art of these fields in view of the construction of devices for the stringent demands imposed by the future Physics experiments and the applications in term of speed and radiation hardness.

Hyperthermia has been found to be of great benefit in combination with radiation therapy or chemotherapy in the management of patients with difficult and com plicated tumor problems. It has been demonstrated to increase the efficacy, of ionising radiation when used locally but also has been of help in combination with systemic chemotherapy where hyperthermia is carried out to the total body. Problems remain with regard to maximizing the effects of hyperthermia as in fluenced by blood flow, heat loss, etc. The present volume defines the current knowledge relative to hyperthermia with radiation therapy and/or chemotherapy, giving a comprehensive overview of its use in cancer management. The field of neuroendocrinology has extended from the initial interest in the hypothalamic control of pituitary secretion to embrace multiple reciprocal interactions between the central nervous system (CNS) and endocrine systems in the coordination of homeostasis and various physiological responses from adaptation to disease. Most recently, epigenetic mechanisms were recognized for their role in the development of the neuroendocrine axes as well as in the mediation of gene-environment interactions in stress-related psychiatry disorders.
The book presents an outline of current activities in the field of biomimetics and integrates a variety of applications comprising biophysics, surface sciences, architecture and medicine. Biomimetics as innovation method is characterised by interdisciplinary information transfer from the life sciences to technical application fields aiming at increased performance, functionality and energy efficiency. The contributions of the book relate to the research areas: - Materials and structures in nanotechnology and biomaterials - Biomimetic approaches to develop new forms, construction principles and design methods in architecture - Information and dynamics in automation, neuroinformatics and biomechanics Readers will be informed about the latest research approaches and results in biomimetics with examples ranging from bionic nano-membranes to function-targeted design of tribological surfaces and the translation of natural auditory coding strategies.
Hyper-structured molecules are topologically well-defined molecules in two or three dimensions and are expected to show novel quantum effects in the molecules themselves or in molecular sequences. This book, covering the supramolecular chemistry and characterization of hyper-structured molecules, provides an invaluable resource on the design and synthesis of topologically controlled molecules such as dendritic polymers, and on ways to handle them using techniques such as photon scanning tunneling microscopy. The book presents a comprehensive discussion of the real application of hyper-structured molecules to organic quantum devices for molecular electronics, photonics and spinics and should be of interest to all researchers working in supramolecular chemistry or molecular electronics.
The emerging field of regenerative medicine has led to a paradigm shift in therapeutic procedures. Scientific discovery in stem cell biology and material sciences, as well as in genetics have resulted in clinical concepts that focus on regeneration rather than repair. Also, translational research provided mankind with therapeutic tools to grow complex tissues and organs for transplantation into patients. These new technologies not only benefited patients but they also have significant socioeconomic potential. This manual aims to provide an overview on a variety of clinically applied strategies in the current field of regenerative medicine, and it also contains concise key data for a rapidly growing industry. As such, both patients and doctors will find the information contained within this manual to be useful and relevant. The editors are both international leaders in the field of regenerative medicine, and both possess a broad spectrum of experience from basic research to clinical application and commercialization.
