This book contains the results in numerical analysis and optimization presented at the ECCOMAS thematic conference “Computational Analysis and Optimization” (CAO 2011) held in Jyväskylä, Finland, June 9–11, 2011. Both the conference and this volume are dedicated to Professor Pekka Neittaanmäki on the occasion of his sixtieth birthday. This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-conference proceedings of the 9th International Conference on Large-Scale Scientific Computations, LSSC 2013, held in Sozopol, Bulgaria, in June 2013. The position taken in this collection of pedagogically written essays is that conjugate gradient algorithms and finite element methods complement each other extremely well. Via their combinations practitioners have been able to solve complicated, direct and inverse, multidemensional problems modeled by ordinary or partial differential equations and inequalities, not necessarily linear, optimal control and optimal design being part of these problems. The aim of this book is to present both methods in the context of complicated problems modeled by linear and nonlinear partial differential equations, to provide an in-depth discussion on their implementation aspects. The authors show that conjugate gradient methods and finite element methods apply to the solution of real-life problems. They address graduate students as well as experts in scientific computing.
The book summarises the outcom of a priority research programme: 'Analysis, Modelling and Computation of Multiphase Flows'. The results of 24 individual research projects are presented. The main objective of the research programme was to provide a better understanding of the physical basis for multiphase gas-liquid flows as they are found in numerous chemical and biochemical reactors. The research comprises steady and unsteady multiphase flows in three frequently found reactor configurations, namely bubble columns without interiors, airlift loop reactors, and aerated stirred vessels. For this purpose new and improved measurement techniques were developed. From the resulting knowledge and data, new and refined models for describing the underlying physical processes were developed, which were used for the establishment and improvement of analytic as well as numerical methods for predicting multiphase reactors. Thereby, the development, lay-out and scale-up of such processes should be possible on a more reliable basis.

This volume contains major lectures given at ENUMATH 99, the 3rd European Conference on Numerical Mathematics and Advanced Applications.The ENUMATH conferences were established in 1995 to provide a forum for discussing current topics in numerical mathematics. They convene leading experts and young scientists, with special emphasis on contributions from Europe. Recent results and new trends are discussed in the analysis of numerical algorithms, as well as their application to challenging scientific and industrial problems.The topics of ENUMATH 99 included finite element methods, a posteriori error control and adaptive mesh design, non-matching grids, least-squares methods for partial differential equations, boundary element methods and optimization in partial differential equations. Apart from theoretical aspects, a major part of the conference was devoted to numerical methods in interdisciplinary applications such as problems in computational fluid, electrodynamics, telecommunications software, as well as visualization.
