Museums, Refugees and Communities explores the ways in which museums in Germany, The Netherlands and the UK have responded to the complexities and ethical dilemmas involved in discussing the reasons for, and issues surrounding, contemporary refugee displacements. Building upon an ethnographic study carried out in the UK with refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo, the book explores how object-led approaches can inspire new ways of thinking about and analysing refugees’ experiences and European museums’ work with their communities. Enlarging the developing body of research on museums’ increasing engagement with human rights and focusing in particular on the social, cultural and practical dimensions of community engagement practices with refugees, the book also aims to inform growing debates on museums as sites of activism. Museums, Refugees and Communities offers an innovative and interdisciplinary examination of museum work with and about refugees. As such, it should appeal to researchers, academics and students engaged in the study of museums, heritage, migration, ethics, community engagement, culture, sociology and anthropology.

Bringing together an international forum of experts, this book looks at how museums, libraries and further public cultural institutions respond to the effects of globalisation, mobility and migration across Europe. It puts forward examples of innovative practice and policies that reflect these challenges, looking at issues such as how cultural institutions present themselves to and interact with multicultural audiences, how to support networking across European institutions, and share practice in core activities such as archiving interpreting and exhibiting artefacts. Academics, practitioners from museums and public institutions and policymakers explore theoretical and practical approaches from a range of different disciplines such as museum and cultural heritage studies, cultural memory studies, social anthropology, sociology of organizations, cultural heritage management and cultural heritage informatics.

Oliphant's Anthem

Ironic, isn't it? For more than a quarter century, Pat Oliphant has skewered the denizens of Congress with his bitingly sharp editorial cartoons. Now, in an exhibit and this companion volume, Oliphant is honored in the very repository of that illustrious body: The Library of Congress.Oliphant is, after all, the most important political cartoonist of the 20th century. His trademark wit -- shared with the adoring fans who read almost 350 daily and Sunday newspapers that carry his work -- has impaled presidents, dogged members of Congress, and critiqued a whole host of issues. From Vietnam to Bosnia, from Lyndon Johnson to Bill Clinton, Pat Oliphant has applied his considerable talent to the wo...

Human Rights Museums

  • Categories: Art

Human Rights Museums presents case studies that trace how calls for historical and social justice, and the commensurate rise of a rights regime have led to the emergence of a new museological genre: the human rights museum. Presenting innovative field research conducted in new and emerging human rights museums across Asia and Latin America, the book adopts a broad museological approach. It does so by including national and community museums, as well as public and private museological initiatives, within its purview. Drawing on in-depth case studies about museums in Taiwan, Japan, Paraguay and Colombia – all discussed within their political and cultural contexts – the book examines the pa...
