There is in our world incessant silent echoes of deception, spread storms of indifference, hidden slave masters that are hindrances to the hearts and minds of those on the roadway to salvation. The only way out of this humankinds disorientation; the one remaining consolation to the troubled souls of men and women, and the return of peace to the thirsting world, will be the light that comes from the word of God made flesh in Christ. It is thus a great gift a priest-homilist and preacher offers the people, as they assemble to commune with their God in the Eucharistic liturgy. The theme for this collection of homilies has two overriding words: gloom and bloomdivergent human circumstances of life that assume new meanings in the presence of Jesus the Savior. As he stood out to feed the teeming desert crowds and made significant leftovers, he now comes again through his Word and in the person of his minister and celebrant to turn the gloom in the hearts of his people into joy, to fill their emptiness with his rich food, and to guide their wobbling steps with his enlightening wisdom. It is simply faith at work. It is the blooming hope from Gods Word. It is vibrancy from the pulpit to the pew!
I have, through this compiled work, Power from the Word: Sunday Homilies for Cycle B, tried to make alive and active Gods Word to us through the liturgical readings for Sundays and Feast Days of the occurring year. The arrangement and methodology flow from those of Cycle AAdvent-Christmas-Lent-Easter-Ordinary Time-Feast Days. Through the homilies, I gave more consideration to what goes around our todays human situations than how it happened when Jesus was walking alongside the streets of Judea and Galilee and working amongst people with different cultural settings. Nevertheless, his teachings and approaches are the indispensable yardstick. And this is what any homilist has to bear in mind, even when this book is considered worthwhile making reference to in preparing homilies for the People of God. Nonetheless, reading through the homilies of this presentation for personal reflection and growth in spiritualityoutside the Sunday liturgyis entirely a different thing. It could be a stitch on time!
Among other relevant issues, this book adds new insights to the proposed Igbo Christian rites of reconciliation. Towards an inculturation, the resolutional equations of the Igbo cultural method of reconciliation - oriko in ala di mma - are balanced with the sacrament of reconciliation in operational life of the people who are pastorally concerned. In this context, the author refers to the Owerri archdiocesan working document on emume nsacha na ndozi, meaning a ritual of purification and peace, as well as to the Igbo Christian rite of reconciliation proposed by Augustine Echema. The method of these new rites is para-liturgical in nature which highlights the importance of reconciliation of human beings with themselves, their neighbours and God, whenever sin has taken place. Paradoxically, this new method of reconciliation can broaden ecumenism and strengthens the social, cultural, political and religious lives of the people. In this sense, reconciliation can be seen as a natural spiritual cord that ties people to themselves and to God in a communal and Christian environment.

Catholic religious communities, like many faith-based organizations, are at a crossroads. They are experiencing a seismic transition not only in their demographics but also in their identity, integrity, and relevancy, indeed, their very soul. Dr. Ted Dunn explores these Graced Crossroads addressing four central questions: 1.What are the graced crossroads religious communities are now facing and the deeper invitations calling them to the inner work of transformation? 2.What are the challenges and opportunities in our world and within Religious Life that have brought communities to these graced crossroads? 3.How might communities assess their capacity to engage in communal transformation, what...
This book contributes to our understanding of a neglected and poorly-understood concept within the development field: ‘capacity development’ in the context of human and organisational sustainable development. Relating ‘capacity development’ to other perspectives in development thinking and practice and giving an account of the concept’s genesis, the book introduces readers to recent empirical research initiatives that help to elucidate the concepts of capacity, capacity development, and capacity management. While capacity development initiatives and programmes have been used by most international and national agencies over the course of the last five decades, the term means different things to different people and especially to different major players in the international community. This weakens its effectiveness. This book therefore strives first of all to set ground rules that can be utilised by international aid providers such as UNDP, OECD, World Bank, and CIDA and practitioners alike.
This book offers a comprehensive yet compact history of this surprisingly little-known but fascinating country, from pre-history to the present.
