The Theology of Priesthood

The Theology of Priesthood is the result of a two-year seminar and dialogue on the priesthood sponsored by the Central Province of Dominican Friars. The goal of the seminar was to promote dialogue around varied theological issues and pastoral concerns, representing diverse viewpoints, in order to deepen our understanding of priesthood in the Roman Catholic tradition. The focus was on the historical, liturgical, and theological aspects of priesthood that require further reflection.

Sex and Reason

  • Categories: Law

Sexual drives are rooted in biology, but we don’t act on them blindly. Indeed, as the eminently readable judge and legal scholar Richard Posner shows, we make quite rational choices about sex, based on the costs and benefits perceived. Drawing on the fields of biology, law, history, religion, and economics, this sweeping study examines societies from ancient Greece to today’s Sweden and issues from masturbation, incest taboos, date rape, and gay marriage to Baby M. The first comprehensive approach to sexuality and its social controls, Posner’s rational choice theory surprises, explains, predicts, and totally absorbs.

From the Beginning to Baptism

In From the Beginning to Baptism, Linda Gibler takes readers on a journey 'from the depths of space and the beginning of time through sacred Scripture and church history 'to discover the origins and creative power of water, oil, and fire. She traces the lives of those elemental entities through their cosmic history, to the point at which they are poured over the head and light the way of one being baptized. These elemental sources of all life are the substances through which new life in Christ begins in the sacrament of baptism. The journey through space and time, through the birth of the Universe and of life, and Gibler's reflections on this drama, help readers to enter into the cosmocentri...

The Significance of the Trinity is Albert Nolan's lectorate in theology (STL), which was granted by the Dominican studium generale in Oxford and was awarded to him in 1961. It is a biblically based piece of work, Thomistic, and oriented towards the relevance of the doctrine for our Christian lives. There are three things we can note before reading it. (1) It shows Albert's beginning his own theological enterprise where all theology begins, or began, with the doctrine of the Trinity. (2) His approach at that time, and his training, was in the thought of St Thomas, which continued to ground him even as he moved more and more in the direction of doing theology contextually. (3) As Jesus became more and more the center of his theological thought, he had already begun his reflections on Jesus in his study of the Trinity. Albert became best known as a theologian with the publication in 1976 of his widely distributed and translated Jesus Before Christianity and thirty years later of Jesus Today. Jesus had already been on his mind but the Jesus of the electorate began where the story of Jesus himself begins, within the Trinity. From the Foreword by Donald Goergen OP, Chicago.
