General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean
The thirty-first session of the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) reviewed the intersessional activities of its Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) and its Committee on Aquaculture (CAQ) and held the first session of its Compliance Committee. Based on advice from SAC and proposals by Members, the GFCM adopted: three Resolutions, including two related to the GFCM statistical framework and one on the use of the 40 mm square mesh size in the codend of trawlnets. Interactions Between Aquaculture and Capture Fisheries
Explores the main issues dealing with interactions between aquaculture and capture fisheries using the existing knowledge at Adriatic basin level. Includes discussions of: local fishing communities (i.e. competition for coastal area use), the impact of aquaculture on local aquatic resources (i.e. genetic pollution, exotic species introduction, pathology spreads), market competition, quality of product, mechanisms to control and prevent competition as well as existing agreements. Report of the Experts Meeting for the Re-establishment of the GFCM Committee on Aquaculture Network on Environment and Aquaculture in the Mediterranean
This publication contains the report of an expert meeting, held in Rome in December 2005, to discuss the re-establishment of the Environment and Aquaculture in the Mediterranean (EAM) Network and to identify short and medium-term activities. The experts suggested that EAM be re-established as a subsidiary body of GFCM-CAQ (General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean - Committee on Aquaculture) and the restructured EAM would work through four working groups.
Report of the Expert Consultation on Utilization and Conservation of Aquatic Genetic Resources
This report discusses the need and methodologies for the utilization and conservation of genetic resources of aquatic animals. More than a review of genetic principles and technologies, the report addresses the application of such principles and technologies in development and conservation projects and research. Specific recommendations are made with regard to the genetic resources contained in natural populations, fisheries stocks, and aquaculture. Recommendations concerning regulatory, policy and legal aspects of aquatic genetic resources are also presented.
Decision-support Systems for Fisheries the "ITAFISH" Case Study
The purpose of the ITAFISH project, executed jointly by the Italian Ministry of Agricultural and Forestry Policies and FAO, was to design, develop and test a computerized system or methodology for the organization, storage and first analysis of the existing data on fisheries and aquaculture available in the Mediterranean for decision-making.
