Mindscapes

Where does private space end and public space begin? How does the individual set about defining these boundaries? How have the computer and the internet altered the relationship between private and public space? Photographer Jacqueline Hassink explores these and similar questions in her project "Mindscapes". Looking at the USA and Japan, two of the economically most influential countries in the world, she has captured the rooms of CEOs, the screen savers of top managers, the coffee cups of office personnel, the extravagant shoes of star designers, or the changing rooms of leading fashion houses in photos taken in 500 leading companies. She creates not only a photographic excursion through closed spaces, but also a mosaic of those private articles which are used to bridge the gap between public and private rooms. Author and photographer Jacqueline Hassink lives and works in New York. Since 1993 her photos have been exhibited in Europe and the USA.

Handbook of Cognitive Mathematics

Cognitive mathematics provides insights into how mathematics works inside the brain and how it is interconnected with other faculties through so-called blending and other associative processes. This handbook is the first large collection of various aspects of cognitive mathematics to be amassed into a single title, covering decades of connection between mathematics and other figurative processes as they manifest themselves in language, art, and even algorithms. It will be of use to anyone working in math cognition and education, with each section of the handbook edited by an international leader in that field.

This book offers a comprehensive exploration of language and semiotic ideologies, focusing on how societies construct meaning through verbal and non-verbal communication. It distinguishes itself by adopting a novel approach that bridges linguistics, semiotics, and anthropology. The research dives into uncharted territory, shedding light on the intricate connections between language, culture, and cognition, offering a perspective less common in traditional linguistics or semiotics. Throughout the book, the reader will encounter rare, illustrative examples showcasing the rich tapestry of human communication. Additionally, previously undisclosed historical data adds depth to the analysis, providing fresh insights. This work is designed for scholars seeking a deeper understanding of meaning-making processes and their cultural variations. It also serves as a resource for those interested in the complex interplay of language and semiotics in everyday life.

Annotations in Scholarly Editions and Research

The term ‘annotation’ is associated in the Humanities and Technical Sciences with different concepts that vary in coverage, application and direction but which also have instructive parallels. This publication mirrors the increasing cooperation that has been taking place between the two disciplines within the scope of the digitalization of the Humanities. It presents the results of an international conference on the concept of annotation that took place at the University of Wuppertal in February 2019. This publication reflects on different practices and associated concepts of annotation in an interdisciplinary perspective, puts them in relation to each other and attempts to systematize their commonalities and divergences. This volume develops a new multimodal semiotic approach to the study of communication, examining how multimodal discourse is construed transmedially and interculturally and how new technologies and cultural stances inform communicative contexts across the world. It contributes to current theoretical debates in the disciplines of semiotics, linguistics, multimodality, and pragmatics, as well as those aspects of pedagogy and film studies that engage with the notions of text and narrative by addressing questions such as: How do we study multimedia communication? How do we incorporate the impact of new media technologies into the study of Linguistics and Semiotics? How do we construe culture in modern communication? How useful are the current multidisciplinary approaches to multimodal communication? Through the analysis of specific case studies that are developed within diverse academic disciplines and which draw on a range of theoretical frameworks, the goal of this book is to provide a basis for an overarching framework that can be applied by scholars and students with different academic and cultural backgrounds.
