A commander of the Order of Military Merit and an Officer of the Order of Canada, Richard Rohmer's military career began in World War II, where he flew over the beaches of Normandy on D-Day, one of a tour of 135 missions for which he received the Distinguished Flying Cross. It was this service as a pilot that led to a unique meeting with Field Marshal Erwin Rommel. Sixty years later Rohmer was appointed the Chair of the Canadian government's D-Day Commemoration Advisory Committee. From negotiating the agreement that led to the McMichael Art Gallery, to lobbying the federal government to develop Canada's north, to re-organizing the militia, Rohmer has been at the centre of many diverse and wide-ranging events in the last half-century. He has flown with President John F. Kennedy, welcomed Queen Elizabeth to Juno Beach on the sixtieth anniversary of D-Day, and written biographies of E.P. Taylor and Peter Munk.

Memoirs and Reflections

From “the Kid” on the Varsity Blues football team to “the Chief” at Osgoode Hall, R. Roy McMurtry has had a remarkably varied and influential career. As reformist attorney general of Ontario, one of the architects of the agreement that brought about the patriation of the Canadian Constitution, high commissioner to the United Kingdom, and chief justice of Ontario, he made a large and enduring contribution to Canadian law, politics, and life. These memoirs cover all these facets of his remarkable career, as well as his law practice, his work on various commissions of inquiry, and his reflections on family, sport, and art. This volume is both an account of his life in public service and a portrait of a humane, humorous, still optimistic, and always decent man.

As technology presses forward, scientific projects are becoming increasingly complex. The international space station, for example, includes over 100 major components, carried aloft during 88 spaces flights which were organized by over 16 nations. The need for improved system integration between the elements of an overall larger technological system has sparked further development of systems of systems (SoS) as a solution for achieving interoperability and superior coordination between heterogeneous systems. Systems of Systems Engineering: Principles and Applications provides engineers with a definitive reference on this newly emerging technology, which is being embraced by such engineering ...

Byways and Bylines

Besides holding down a full-time editor's job on a big city daily newspaper, Harvey Currell used his spare time for 49 years at the work he loved best-combing the byways and backwoods of Ontario-and infrequently even England and the eastern U.S.-in search of fascinating destinations never discovered by travelers who stick to the superhighways. Every week he distilled his adventures into a Trips column-from 1958 to 1971 for The Toronto Telegram and from 1971 to 2007 for The Toronto Sun. On many of his early expeditions he had two eager passengers, his young daughter and son. They would listen carefully as Harvey interviewed foresters, naturalists, archaeologists, farmers, conservation officer...
