A guide to the plane that changed commercial aviation: “A whopping 109 color photos shows kits in various stages of completion . . . Enjoyed it.” —Historical Miniatures Gaming Society No airliner in the history of commercial aviation has had a more profound effect than the Douglas DC-3. Reliable and easy to maintain, it carried passengers in greater comfort than ever before. Its origins stem from a design by the Douglas Aircraft Company of Santa Monica, California. The DC-3 revolutionized air travel to an extent only surpassed by the advent of the jet aircraft. What made the DC-3 particularly special was the degree of safety it provided. Thanks to the DC-3 and its reputation for strength and reliability, in 1937 air travel insurance finally became available for the general public. Eight decades after its first debut, the DC-3 is still flying, a tribute to the solidity of its brilliant design, and it will likely continue to fly for a long time.

This book, originally published in 1943, is a biographical account of Donald Douglas (1892-1981), the influential American aircraft industrialist, engineer and aviation pioneer who designed and built the Douglas Cloudster—the first airplane with a payload greater than its own weight. Douglas was the founder of the Douglas Aircraft Company in 1921 (the company later merged into McDonnell Douglas Corporation) and, under his leadership, the company became one of the leaders of the commercial aircraft industry, engaging in a decades-long struggle for supremacy with arch-rival William Boeing and the company he founded, Boeing. A gripping read for aviation enthusiasts.

Douglas DC

Like the P-51 Mustang and Supermarine Spitfire, the Douglas DC-3 is an iconic aircraft design. It has endured more than any other with several hundred still in use worldwide in locations as far apart as Africa, Antarctica and the US. Many of the current operators use turbine conversions of the DC-3mainly using Basler, SAAF and Dodson International the main proponents. Just about every major post-war airline began their schedules with the DC-3. Many took advantage of post-war military surplus C-47s that had already written huge volumes of history with their roles with the US Army Air Corps in the Second World War such as the D-Day landings. Many enthusiast organisations still keep DC-3s airworthy and fly them for members. However, the days of DC-3 operations are now nearing an end thanks to spares unavailability, cost and the shortages of Avgas fuel in remote parts of the world. The Douglas DC-3 is to aviation what the Volkswagen and Ford were to motoring, and what the DC-3 operators started, the 21st century Airbus/Boeing operators continued thanks to the astonishing legacy of this remarkable aircraft. 198 black-and white and 71 colour photographs
