Apartheid vertigo, the dizzying sensation following prolonged oppression and delusions of skin colour, is the focus of this book. For centuries, the colour-code shaped state and national ideals, created social and emotional distances between social groups, permeated public and private spheres, and dehumanized Africans of all nationalities in South Africa. Two decades after the demise of official apartheid, despite four successive black governments, apartheid vertigo still distorts South Africa's postcolonial reality. The colour-code endures, but now in postcolonial masks. Political freedom notwithstanding, vast sections of the black citizenry have adopted and adapted the code to fit the new ...

African Youth Cultures in a Globalized World

All over the world, there is growing concern about the ramifications of globalization, late-modernity and general global social and economic restructuring on the lives and futures of young people. Bringing together a wide body of research to reflect on youth responses to social change in Africa, this volume shows that while young people in the region face extraordinary social challenges in their everyday lives, they also continue to devise unique ways to reinvent their difficult circumstances and prosper in the midst of seismic global and local social changes.

This volume was first published by Inter-Disciplinary Press in 2014. This volume, entitled Negotiating Boundaries in Multicultural Societies, is divided into two main sections: “The Politics of Belonging” and “The Politics of Exclusion”. Both sections serve to explore the concepts of “belonging” and “exclusion” from an empirical political perspective. Based on practical case-studies, each chapter sheds light on empirical aspects of the challenges of integration, identity and citizenship within multicultural societies. In addition to the challenges faced by particular social groups regarding their cultural and social integration that very much affects their sense of belonging and their overall perception of their own identity, institutionalized political exclusion is still condoned, if not practiced, by states worldwide. When found in a society of ‘multiple identities’, failed integration often results in divided culturalism and hence nations. This volume explores this predicament while referring to a number of country case-studies.

Criminal Resistance?

Crude oil extraction in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria generates 96% of all foreign earnings and 85% of state revenues, making it crucial to the survival of the Nigerian state. Several generations of state neglect, corruption and mismanagement have ensured that the Delta region is one of the most socio-economically and politically deprived in the country. By the late 1990s there was a frightening proliferation of armed gangs and insurgent groups. Illegal oil bunkering, pipeline vandalism, disruption of oil production activities, riots, and demonstrations intensified and in 2003, insurgents began kidnapping oil workers at a frenetic pace. In late 2005, an uber-insurgent movement 'organizat...

In this wide-ranging collection of essays, Mawuko-Yevugah explores the challenges of political reform and democratic governance in Africa at the beginning of the 21st Century, focusing largely on Ghanas experience. The inspiration for the title of the collection, AFRICAN TIME, comes from Kwame Nkrumahs pan-African optimism as well as from recent discourses around African Renaissance, Africas Century, Africa Rising, etc. At Ghanas founding in 1957, Nkrumah proclaimed: Our independence is meaningless unless it is linked up to the total liberation of the African continent. Today, from now on, there is a new African in the worldThat new African is ready to fight his own battles and show that aft...

Precarity in Culture

The present state of research in precarity demands meta-questions and hence we need to probe both philosophy and practice in light of precarity’s different manifestations. The plural perspectives by which this phenomenon can be addressed also suggest potential for further theorization alongside that of Butler and her critics. By inviting scholars and experts from different fields and disciplines, and by applying multiple frameworks, methodological approaches, and critical lenses, this volume seeks to explore the different facets of our precarious world, while providing insights into the challenges of our possible futures.

A country’s attitudinal profile is as much a part of its social reality as are its demographic make-up, its culture and its distinctive social patterns. It helps to provide a nuanced picture of a country’s circumstances, its continuities and changes, its democratic health, and how it feels to live there. It also helps to measure the country's progress towards the achievement of its economic, social and political goals, based on the measurement of both 'objective' and 'subjective' realities. South African Social Attitudes: Changing Times, Diverse Voices is a new series aimed at providing an analysis of attitudes and values towards a wide range of social and political issues relevant to li...
