Centre for Research in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (CRNN), University of Calcutta organized a national conference, NS&NT-2014 in the year 2014. This volume compiles a few papers presented in the conference as well as reviews from experts received after the conference. This is therefore not a conference proceeding, but an outcome of the conference. The compiled papers break the boundaries of subjects and disciplines and hence are expected to be interesting to all working in the field of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology. This collection is also indicative of the present direction of research in nanotechnology by the researchers of the university and their collaborators.
This open access book takes a multidisciplinary approach to provide a holistic understanding of late old age, and situates the aged person within the context of family, caregivers, clinical and other institutions. All through the book, the author discusses preparedness for an aging individual as well as the society in the Indian context. The book highlights inevitable but mostly neglected health issues like depression, dementia, fall, and frailty and provides detailed analyses of solutions that are practicable in low resource settings. It also brings up intergenerational differences and harmony in the context of holistic care of older Indians. Alongside clinical perspectives, the book uses n...
The present book highlight ethnographic, demographic, nutritional ecological, economic and cultural profiles in relation to the scenario of food and nutition of five tribal communities of India viz., the Lodhas, the Mahalis, the Koras, the Santals and the Mundas. The study pinpoints nutritional anthropology of the foregoing communities to assess and recommend ameliorative measures. The profiles of different aspects referred to above are interwoven with one another and conjointly provide to frame a holistic picture which would hopefully better equip the readers to assess the anthropo-nutritional problems of the tribal communities and also find out the plausible solution to them. Micro-study of this kind on the tribal population is probably the maiden venture in the Indian context. The book would be helpful to the planners, administrators public health workers, nutritionists, medical personnels, biochemists, sociologists, anthroopologists and other interested in anthropo-nutritional profile of the Indian tribes.
Assessing the impacts of climate change will be a vital task in developed as well as in developingcountries because of many interdependent physical, biological and chemical processes are ongoing inearth and human systems. These processes can be affected by change in climate, causing an effect onnatural resources (water resources, forest products, etc.), on biodiversity, ecosystem services and onplants in general, some positive and on others negative effects, such as, altering biophysical relationship, shrinking of habitats, desertification and general shift in natural world.Warming directly affects rate of plant respiration, photosynthesis, and other biogeochemicalprocesses. For instance, enhanced CO2 concentration can increase photosynthetic rate especially for plantsgrowing under warm and dry condition such as C3 plants. Naturally, plants have their own mechanism totolerate a certain level of increased temperature.
This study gives an interesting glimpse of the city police`s responses and reactions to Naxalite actions in Calcutta during the nineteen-seventies.
This book comprises select proceedings of the annual conference of the Indian Geotechnical Society. The conference brings together research and case histories on various aspects of geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineering. The book presents papers on geotechnical applications and case histories, covering topics such as (i) Characterization of Geomaterials and Physical Modelling; (ii) Foundations and Deep Excavations; (iii) Soil Stabilization and Ground Improvement; (iv) Geoenvironmental Engineering and Waste Material Utilization; (v) Soil Dynamics and Earthquake Geotechnical Engineering; (vi) Earth Retaining Structures, Dams and Embankments; (vii) Slope Stability and Landslides; (viii) ...
