Ehlers–Danlos syndromes (EDS) are a group of heritable connective tissue disorders (HCTDs) characterized by a variable degree of skin hyperextensibility, joint hypermobility and tissue fragility. The current EDS classification distinguishes 13 subtypes and 19 different causal genes mainly involved in collagen and extracellular matrix synthesis and maintenance. EDS need to be differentiated from other HCTDs with a variable clinical overlap, including Marfan syndrome and related disorders, some types of skeletal dysplasia and cutis laxa. The clinical recognition of EDS is not always straightforward, and, for a definite diagnosis, molecular testing can be of great assistance, especially in pa...

State of Democracy in South Asia

"This report seeks to shift the locus of discourse on democracy away from the global North to 'most of the world'. It does so by examining democratic experience in South Asia - a region marked by poverty, illiteracy, complex diversities, and multiple and overlapping structures of social hierarchy-and by daring to ask not just what democracy has done to South Asia but also what South Asia has done to democracy. Based on the first - ever social scientific survey of political opinions and attitudes across the five countries in the region-Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka-the report offers a fresh analysis of the promise of democracy for the ordinary people, its institutional slippages, obstacles in its functioning, and its mixed outcomes. The report combines public opinion data with expert assessment, case studies, and dialogue with democracy activists."--BOOK JACKET.

The Middle Class in World Society

This volume delves into the study of the world’s emerging middle class. With essays on Europe, the United States, Africa, Latin America, and Asia, the book studies recent trends and developments in middle class evolution at the global, regional, national, and local levels. It reconsiders the conceptualization of the middle class, with a focus on the diversity of middle class formation in different regions and zones of world society. It also explores middle class lifestyles and everyday experiences, including experiences of social mobility, feelings of insecurity and anxiety, and even middle class engagement with social activism. Drawing on extensive fieldwork and in-depth interviews, the book provides a sophisticated analysis of this new and rapidly expanding socioeconomic group and puts forth some provocative ideas for intellectual and policy debates. It will be of importance to students and researchers of sociology, economics, development studies, political studies, Latin American studies, and Asian Studies.

Regional Products and Rural Livelihoods

Regional Products and Rural Livelihoods

In the realm of trade, there exists a long tradition of labelling products with the emphasis on their place of origin to convey their quality. These products with Geographical Indications (GIs) tag, in the parlance of intellectual property rights, indicate the link between the geographic location and the product and represent the collective rights of the territory-specific communities that are engaged in the production of that commodity. With its entry into the World Trade Organization, India has implemented GI within a legal framework. Through select case studies of products like textiles and crafts in South India, Regional Products and Rural Livelihoods looks at the ramifications of GI implementation at macro and micro levels. It explores the involvement of stakeholders with respect to the reputation of a place/community and the institutional challenges that emerge in the process of GI implementation. This volume highlights the need for collective action by stakeholders to actualize economic gains through GI and analyses its possible outcomes, such as improved livelihoods for producers and authentic products for the consumers.
