Veel patiënten in een intensive care unit (ICU) worden behandeld vanwege meervoudig orgaanfalen. Zij ontwikkelen dit syndroom tijdens de intensieve behandeling of worden ermee opgenomen op een ICU. Het meervoudig orgaandisfunctie-syndroom (MODS) kan ontstaan na een periode van shock of ernstige infecties. De aandoening wordt beschouwd als een van de belangrijkste doodsoorzaken van de kritisch zieke patiënt op de ICU. Ontwikkelingen in de intensieve geneeskunde hebben ertoe geleid dat de kansen op herstel van patiënten met MODS aanzienlijk zijn verbeterd. Ook is de kans kleiner dat het MODS zich ontwikkelt. In minder dan dertig jaar tijd is de sterfte van patiënten door MODS gehalveerd. De professionalisering van de organisatiestructuur op de IC draagt bij aan de daling van de sterftekansen van kritisch zieke patiënten.
