Designing engineering products technical systems and/or transformation processes requires a range of information, know-how, experience, and engineering analysis, to find an optimal solution. Creativity and open-mindedness can be greatly assisted by systematic design engineering, which will ultimately lead to improved outcomes, documentatio
This proven and internationally recognized text teaches the methods of engineering design as a condition of successful product development. It breaks down the design process into phases and then into distinct steps, each with its own working methods. The book provides more examples of product development; it also tightens the scientific bases of its design ideas with new solution fields in composite components, building methods, mechatronics and adaptronics. The economics of design and development are covered and electronic design process technology integrated into its methods. The book is sharply written and well-illustrated.
The tendency of a living organism to move to a more favourable environment is a natural but complex reaction, involving the integration of sometimes conflicting environmental stimuli as well as a coordinated mechanical response. The response of motile, single cell organisms to environmental stimuli provides a useful model for understanding first of all how the environment is monitored and sensed, and secondly how this information is processed to result in an integrated and coordinated response. The volume looks at a large number of well-studied examples of the chemotactic response, in prokaryotes and eukaryotes, and casts new light on how cells process information and react to their environment. This fundamental response is of great importance in understanding one of the characteristic features of living organisms.
This book contains an edited version of the lectures and selected contributions presented during the Advanced Summer Institute on “Product Engineering: Eco-Design, Technologies and Green Energy” organized at the st Transilvania University of Brasov (Romania) in the period 14-21 of July 2004. The Advanced Summer Institute (ASI) was organized in the framework of the European FP5 funded project “ADEPT – Advanced computer aided Design of Ecological Products and Technologies integrating green energy sources” and was devoted to the Product Engineering field, with particular attention to the aspects related to the environmentally conscious design and green energy sources. The objective of...
As the existence of all life forms on our planet is currently in grave danger from the climate emergency caused by Homo sapiens, the words "sustainability" and "eco-responsibility" have entered the daily-use vocabularies of scientists, engineers, economists, business managers, industrialists, capitalists, and policy makers. Normal activities undertaken for the design of products and systems in industrialisms must be revamped. As the bioworld is a great resource for eco-responsible design activities, an overview of biologically inspired design is presented in this book in simple terms for anyone with even high-school education. Beginning with an introduction to the process of design in industry, the book presents the bioworld as a design resource along with the rationale for biologically inspired design. Problem-driven and solution-driven approaches for biologically inspired design are described next. The last chapter is focused on biologically inspired design for environment.
As with any art, science, or discipline, natural talent is only part of the equation. Consistent success stems from honing your skills, cultivating good techniques, and hard work. Design engineering, a field often considered an intuitive process not amenable to scientific investigation, is no exception. Providing descriptive theory, broad context,
While investigations into both theories and models has remained a major strand of engineering design research, current literature sorely lacks a reference book that provides a comprehensive and up-to-date anthology of theories and models, and their philosophical and empirical underpinnings; An Anthology of Theories and Models of Design fills this gap. The text collects the expert views of an international authorship, covering: · significant theories in engineering design, including CK theory, domain theory, and the theory of technical systems; · current models of design, from a function behavior structure model to an integrated model; · important empirical research findings from studies into design; and · philosophical underpinnings of design itself. For educators and researchers in engineering design, An Anthology of Theories and Models of Design gives access to in-depth coverage of theoretical and empirical developments in this area; for practitioners, the book will provide exposure to theoretical and empirical foundations to methods and tools that are currently practiced as well as those in the process of development.
