The Struggle for the World
What do Mexico's Zapatistas, the French National Front, Slow Food, rave subculture, and al-Qaeda all have in common? From right-wing to left-wing to no-wing, they all proudly proclaim their mission to defend their distinctive identities against modernity's homogenizing processes. This controversial book establishes fundamental similarities between anti-globalization "aurora" movements that aim to destroy the modern world and bring a radiant new dawn to humankind. While these groups often despise one another, they nonetheless share many fundamental characteristics, goals, and attitudes. Drawing on the original writings and actions of various anti-globalist groups, the authors reveal a common tendency toward charismatic leadership, good versus evil worldviews, the quest for authentic identity, concern with ritual, and unbending demands for total commitment. These movements, however they pursue world transformation and personal transcendence, are a prominent and continuing aspect of our present condition. This book is a strong reminder that, no matter what the cause, revolution is not a thing of the past and the fervent search for another world continues.
The Struggle for Mexico
In the 1970s political and economic changes to the world order led to an emerging "globalization" credited with the ceding of state sovereignty to a "de facto world government" of transnational corporations and with the anti-globalism movement directed at countering it. Mexico, however, has maintained the salience of the national unit in the form of the state as a ruling apparatus and as the target of organized, non-state, political opposition. This study examines the transformation of Mexico's social and political organization from state corporatism to transnationalized corporatism, a form distinguished by the effect that International Financial Institutions and the World Trade Organization have on the state's relationship to the rest of society. By exploring how non-governmental organizations, political parties, unions and social movements (notably the Zapatistas) engage with the state under neoliberalism, this work significantly emphasizes the continued relevance of corporatist structures in an environment of electoral democratic reform.

Beginning with Number 41 (1979), the University of Texas Press became the publisher of the most comprehensive annual bibliography in Latin American Studies. Compiled by the Hispanic Division of the Library of Congress and annotated by a corps of more than 140 specialists in various disciplines, the Handbook alternates from year to year between social sciences and humanities. The Handbook annotates works on Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean and the Guianas, Spanish South America, and Brazil, as well as materials covering Latin America as a whole. Most of the subsections are preceded by introductory essays that serve as biannual evaluations of the literature and research underway in specialized areas. Subject categories for the Social Sciences editions include anthropology; geography; government and politics; international relations; political economy; and sociology.
Poetics of Indigenismo in Zapatista Discourse
This book contributes to a re-visioning of the literature of revolutions, repositioning the writings of Subcomandante Marcos as quasi-“indigenous” literary texts. Highlights include a study of the role of Zapatista mythopoetics in re-imagining the nature of revolution; and an examination of how a native subculture and cosmovision were made intelligible to an international audience. Close readings of a group of stories, essays and communiques by Marcos explore the emergence of a thoroughly hybrid literary style. These texts are analyzed in relation to existing genres such Native American literature, environmental literature, and the literature of the Mexican revolution. The book shows that, while Marcos employs the iconography of Che Guevara, Zapata, et al, and in some ways furthers the “romance of revolution” for an electronically networked world, he has also popularized on an international stage the post-Cold War aspiration to “change the world without taking power.”

Recientemente, muchos observadores de políticas y prácticas de cohesión social han discutido que la globalización ha promovido la convergencia global hacia modelos neo-liberales en este campo. Similarmente, estudiosos y practicionarios de la política regional han contenido que las políticas sociales de Europa representan las "mejores prácticas" a nivel global y por ello han sido promovidas en otras regiones del mundo (por ejemplo en las recientes cumbres UE-Latinoamérica sobre cohesión social), lo que lleva también a la convergencia en la elaboración de la política. Este libro cuestiona estas afirmaciones y se pregunta si distintos enfoques regionales a la cohesión social son todavía pertinentes. El análisis trans-regional comparativo presentado en este volumen está basado en el examen de la competencia entre actores (poder), el papel de la historia y tradiciones sociales (tiempo) y la importancia de límites geográficos a la cohesión social (espacio).
