Access and accessibility are central themes in architecture and urbanism. The goal is to make buildings accessible both horizontally and vertically, as well as to provide them with technical infrastructure. But the aim is also to ensure the accessibility of whole streets, routes, parks, and squares, and even entire cities and regions. Today, access is a key concept in the most disparate areas of life. This year we celebrated another anniversary: after 20 years of SAFECOMP in 1999, th this was the 20 SAFECOMP since its inauguration in 1979. This series of events focuses on critical computer applications. It is intended to be a platform for knowledge transfer between academia, industry, and research institutions. Papers are solicited on all aspects of computer systems in which safety, reliability, and security (applied to safety in terms of integrity and availability) are of importance. The 20th SAFECOMP tried to cover new grounds, both thematically and geographically. Since MACINTER I appeared two years ago, research into human-computer interaction has been advancing at an undiminished rate all over the world. The papers in this book deal with the psychological aspects of human-computer interaction, and present the results of basic and applied psychological research. The basic research areas are cognitive issues in human-computer interaction, user's mental models, user's strategies, knowledge representation and elicitation, and learning and user training. The application of findings in psychology-based system design is also discussed. Emphasis is placed on both interdisciplinary cooperation (between psychology and computer science) as well as intradisciplinary cooperation (between different fields of psychology e.g. cognitive and industrial psychology). A general overview on the state of the art in quite different groups in East and West Europe and Japan is presented. Empirical data as well as theoretical and methodological approaches for the practical design of human-computer interaction are summarized in this book.
