Neural Systems: Analysis and Modeling

In recent years there has been tremendous activity in computational neuroscience resulting from two parallel developments. On the one hand, our knowledge of real nervous systems has increased dramatically over the years; on the other, there is now enough computing power available to perform realistic simulations of actual neural circuits. This is leading to a revolution in quantitative neuroscience, which is attracting a growing number of scientists from non-biological disciplines. These scientists bring with them expertise in signal processing, information theory, and dynamical systems theory that has helped transform our ways of approaching neural systems. New developments in experimental ...

Computer Science

Computer Science: The Hardware, Software and Heart of It focuses on the deeper aspects of the two recognized subdivisions of Computer Science, Software and Hardware. These subdivisions are shown to be closely interrelated as a result of the stored-program concept. Computer Science: The Hardware, Software and Heart of It includes certain classical theoretical computer science topics such as Unsolvability (e.g. the halting problem) and Undecidability (e.g. Godel’s incompleteness theorem) that treat problems that exist under the Church-Turing thesis of computation. These problem topics explain inherent limits lying at the heart of software, and in effect define boundaries beyond which compute...

A Digital Optical Cellular Image Processor

The research detailed in this book has been motivated by the search for a simple parallel digital optical architecture for image processing. The development of a simple unified consistent theory of parallel binary image processing is described and its implementation on digital optical processors is considered. Both theoretical and experimental work are included, and both algorithmic and architectural designs are covered. Also presented are the experimental results of the implementation of a prototype Digital Optical Cellular Image Processor (DOCIP) system used to demonstrate the concept of the DOCIP architecture.

Mathematics of Computation 1943-1993: A Half-Century of Computational Mathematics

Proceedings of an International Conference held in Vancouver, B.C., August 1993, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the founding of the journal Mathematics of Computation. It consisted of a Symposium on Numerical Analysis and a Minisymposium of Computational Number Theory. This proceedings contains 14 invited papers, including two not presented at the conference--an historical essay on integer factorization, and a paper on componentwise perturbation bounds in linear algebra. The invited papers present surveys on the various subdisciplines covered by Mathematics of Computation, in a historical perspective and in a language accessible to a wide audience. The 46 contributed papers address contemporary specialized work. Annotation copyright by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

The Neurobiology of Computation

This volume includes papers presented at the Third Annual Computation and Neural Systems meeting (CNS*94) held in Monterey California, July 21 - July 26, 1994. This collection includes 71 of the more than 100 papers presented at this year's meeting. Acceptance for meeting presentation was based on the peer review of preliminary papers by at least two referees. The papers in this volume were submitted in final form after the meeting. As represented by this volume, CNS meetings continue to expand in quality, size and breadth of focus as increasing numbers of neuroscientists are taking a computational approach to understanding nervous system function. The CNS meetings are intended to showcase t...

Foundations of Algebraic Specification and Formal Software Development

This book provides foundations for software specification and formal software development from the perspective of work on algebraic specification, concentrating on developing basic concepts and studying their fundamental properties. These foundations are built on a solid mathematical basis, using elements of universal algebra, category theory and logic, and this mathematical toolbox provides a convenient language for precisely formulating the concepts involved in software specification and development. Once formally defined, these notions become subject to mathematical investigation, and this interplay between mathematics and software engineering yields results that are mathematically intere...

Study and Research Guide in Computer Science

Computer science departments at universities in the U.S.A. are world renowned. This handy reference guide gives detailed profiles of 40 of the best known among them. The profiles are organized in a uniform layout to present basic information, faculty, curriculum, courses for graduate students, affiilated institutions, facilities, research areas, funding, selected projects, and collaborations. Two full alphabetical listings of professors are included, one giving their universities and the other their research areas. The guide will be indispensible for anyone - student or faculty, not only in the U.S.A. - interested in research and education in computer science in the U.S.A.

Banach Algebras and the General Theory of *-Algebras: Volume 1, Algebras and Banach Algebras

This is the first volume of a two volume set that provides a modern account of basic Banach algebra theory including all known results on general Banach *-algebras. This account emphasizes the role of *-algebraic structure and explores the algebraic results that underlie the theory of Banach algebras and *-algebras. The first volume, which contains previously unpublished results, is an independent, self-contained reference on Banach algebra theory. Each topic is treated in the maximum interesting generality within the framework of some class of complex algebras rather than topological algebras. Proofs are presented in complete detail at a level accessible to graduate students. The book contains a wealth of historical comments, background material, examples, particularly in noncommutative harmonic analysis, and an extensive bibliography. Volume II is forthcoming.
