Principles of Polymer Chemistry

Principles of Polymer Chemistry, Second Edition was written for advanced undergraduate and graduate students in polymer chemistry, along with practicing chemists who need a reference guide. Many important events have taken place since the First Edition was published in 1995, and they are updated here. For example, sections have been included on controlled/living free radical polymerization, and sections on metathesis type polymerization and metallocene catalysts were expanded. The book was also expanded to include discussions of thermodynamics of elasticity, thermodynamics of polymeric solutions, and rheology and viscoelasticity. A chapter on degradation of polymers was also added.

Coordination Polymerization

Edwin J. Vandenberg, a long time researcher at the Research Center of Hercules Incorporated, was the 1981 winner of the American Chemical Society Award in Polymer Chemistry, sponsored by the Witco Chemical Corp. Following is the citation of the accomplishments which led to this award. "In recognition of his pioneering research that advanced polymer science and that led to the discovery and development of isotactic polypropylene, epichlorohydrin and propylene oxide elastomers, new polymerization catalysts, and the hydrogen method of controlling molecular weights of Ziegler polyolefins." It was my pleasure to arrange a symposium to celebrate this award at the Atlanta Meeting of the American Ch...

This unified presentation of cationic polymerization discusses initiation, propagation, transfer, and termination in cationic polymerizations of alkenes and heterocycles. It also elucidates the mechanisms of the reactions involved in all carbocationic and ring-opening polymerizations. It is written by internationally acclaimed experts in their respective fields.

Polymerization of Heterocycles (Ring Opening) is a collection of papers presented at the International Symposium on Polymerization of Heterocycles (Ring-Opening) held in Warsaw, Poland on June 23-25, 1975. The first paper describes the developments and physical meaning of ion pairs and higher ionic aggregates. Another paper explains the process of obtaining linear polymers, containing rings in the main chain. The book interprets the various behaviors of polymers that can result in high optical yields of stereoelectivity ratios equal to 8. The text then discusses future trends in aldehyde and carbonyl polymerization, including some problem areas pertaining to failures to homopolymerize or cop...

Polymer Syntheses, Volume I presents detailed laboratory instructions for the preparation of polymers by different functional group classes. This book provides the laboratory procedures for the preparation of polymers containing phosphorus in various oxidation states. Organized into 15 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of some selected preparative methods for carrying out the major methods of polymerization in the laboratory. This text then examines the synthesis of phosphonitrilic polymers. Other chapters consider the synthesis of peroxide and hydroperoxide free radical initiators. This book discusses as well the principles involved in the preparation of emulsion polymers, which are applicable to the preparation of polymers of a wide variety of vinyl monomers and many copolymerizations. The final chapter deals with the chemistry of organometallic and organometalloid peroxides. This book is a valuable resource for chemists involved in the designing of phosphorus polymers to meet fire retardant requirements of various products.

Preparation and Properties of Stereoregular Polymers

This book contains the texts of the main lectures presented at the NATO Advanced Studies Institute on "Advances in Preparation and Properties of Stereoregular Polymers" held at Tirrenia near Pisa, Italy, from October 3 to 14, 1978. A few contributed papers have also been included because they were concerned with topics not included in the main lectures. The primary objective of the Institute was to assist in the further development of stereoregular polymers because of the ever-increasing demand for new products with exceptional chemical and physical properties. This need has reawakened interest in the field. Indeed there is now a rapidly increasing activity in the study of stereoregular poly...
