This book summarizes research of strongly nonlocal processes in dense weakly ionized atmospheric and laboratory plasmas beginning with the prediction of C. Wilson in 1925. Fundamentals of the nonlocal model of breakdown and discharges in dense gases formulated by Prof. Babich in the 1970s underlie experimental research and numerical simulations of discharges in dense gases in very strong electric fields. Earlier unknown phenomena and gas-discharge dependencies discovered by Prof. Babich and his colleagues have been the focus of international attention and interest.
The Advanced Study Institute on Breakdown and Discharges in Gases was held in Les Arcs, France, June 28 to July 10, 1981. The object of the Institute was to provide a broad but compre hensive presentation of the various topics in the field of Gaseous electronics. To achieve this goal, a number of lectures, seminars, and panel discussions were scheduled. Each topic was developed by two tutorial and/or review lectures, and brought to the present state of the topic by seminars and panel discussions. The program of topics and speakers was selected with the assistance of the advisory committee composed of: J. A. Rees, European Coordinator, England; M. Goldman, French Coordinator, France; A. H. Gu...

The Collected Works of Irving Langmuir, Volume 4: Electrical Discharge is a 12-chapter text that covers the fundamental and theoretical aspects of electrical discharge, with a particular emphasis on discharge in gases. The opening chapters are concerned the negative probes as being due to the random positive-ion current of the plasma and the proper space-charge with a very simple discharge tube and some miscellaneous experiments on a simple tube in which streamer type discharges were observed, as well as the effects of small amounts of tungsten in the argon discharge. These topics are followed by discussions on the verification of the Langmuir Probe-Theory; the disturbing effects of mercury vapor blast from the cathode spot on the mercury pool; and the phenomena observed in the low pressure discharges. Other chapters explore the Faraday dark space of the glow discharge and how the electrons of a beam in a plasma are given their higher velocity components. The final chapters introduce the concept of plasma oscillation. This book will be of value to electronics engineers and technical workers.
This is an up-to-date review of studies in the physics of pulsed electrical discharges in a vacuum. It gives the reader detailed information on the processes occurring at electrodes and in vacuum gaps and on the mechanisms of discharge initiation and development. Modern techniques and equipment are described in detail. Their high temporal and spatial resolution may be used to solve a number of problems concerning the short-term and microscopic aspects of discharges. A summary is given of a great deal of experimental data on the kinetics of vacuum breakdown. The authors used these results to identify a series of steps in the vacuum breakdown phenomenon. They were the first to discover and describe the explosive electron emission phenomenon and to show its fundamental role in the spark and the arc stages of a discharge. The information in this book may encourage the reader to design new experiments. The results presented may be applied to solve specific research or engineering problems.
Excerpt from Elementary Lectures on Electric Discharges: Waves and Impulses, and Other Transients In the following I am trying to give a short outline of those phenomenon which have become the most important to the electrical engineer, as on their understandings and control depends the further successful advance of electrical engineering. The art has now so far advanced that the phenomena of the steady flow of power are well understood. Generators, motors, transforming devices, transmission and distribution conductors can, with relatively little difficulty, be calculated, and the phenomena occurring in them under normal conditions of operation predetermined and controlled. Usually, however, ...
Physical models of gas discharge processes in gas flows and numerical simulation methods, which are used for numerical simulation of these phenomena are considered in the book. Significant attention is given to a solution of two-dimensional problems of physical mechanics of electric arc, radio-frequency, micro-wave, and optical discharges, as well as to investigation of electrodynamic structure of direct current glow discharges. Problems of modern computational magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) are considered also. Prospects of the different kinds of discharges use in aerospace applications are discussed. This book is intended for scientists and engineers concerned with physical gas dynamics, physics of the low-temperature plasma and gas discharges, and also for students and post-graduate students of physical and technical specialties of universities.
