An American Genius: The Life of Ernest Orlando Lawrence, Father of the Cyclotron
Born and raised in a small South Dakota prairie town, Ernest Orlando Lawrence (1901-1958), the grandson of Norwegian immigrants, was educated in country schools and attended the universities of South Dakota, Minnesota, and Chicago before obtaining his PhD at Yale in 1925. At age 29, he became the youngest full professor in the history of the University of California at Berkeley. He received the Nobel prize in 1939 for his invention of the cyclotron which became an essential tool during the Manhattan project to enrich uranium via electromagnetic separation at Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Niskayuna
In the 17th century, the area now called Niskayuna consisted mostly of cornfields. Niskayuna officially became a town in Schenectady County when the county split off from Albany County in 1809. From its early days as a farming community to its present state as a suburban town, Niskayuna has attracted residents from many areas. Transportation has been crucial to the development of the town, beginning with the Albany-Schenectady Turnpike. After the turnpike came the Erie Canal, proposed in 1808 and completed in 1825, which linked the waters of Lake Erie in the west to the Hudson River. Water transportation was soon joined by the Schenectady Railroad Corporation and the Troy and Schenectady Railroad. Finally, a modern system of roads and highways came into being during the 20th century. As manufacturing grew in the nearby city of Schenectady, Niskayuna emerged as the residential suburb that it is today.

The Technological Fix
The term "technological fix" should mean a fix provided by technology--a solution for all of our problems, from medicine and food production to the environment and business. Instead, technological fix has come to mean a cheap, quick fix using inappropriate technology that usually creates more problems than it solves. This collection sets out the distinction between a technological fix and a true technological solution. Bringing together scholars from a variety of disciplines, the essays trace the technological fix as it has appeared throughout the twentieth century. Addressing such "fixes" as artificial hearts, industrial agriculture and climate engineering, these essays examine our need to turn to technology for solutions to all of our problems.
