Grammatical gaps: definition, typology and theory

Translating Change explores and analyses the impact of changes in society, culture and language on the translation and interpreting process and product. It looks at how social attitudes, behaviours and values change over time, how languages respond to these changes, how these changes are reflected in the processing and production of translations and how technological change and economic uncertainty in the wake of events such as the COVID-19 pandemic and Brexit affect the translation market. The authors examine trends in language change in English, French, German, Italian and Spanish. The highly topical approach to social, cultural and language change is predominantly synchronic and pragmatic...

Light verbs

Light verbs are semantically reduced verbs that simultaneously exhibit a heavy verb usage. The papers collected in this volume examine light verbs from different perspectives in various languages, including several Romance and Germanic languages such as Italian, Spanish, Catalan, German, and English, as well as Mandarin Chinese and Japanese. The questions addressed in this volume include: What meaning does a light verb contribute to a light verb construction? What restrictions regarding nominal elements do light verbs exhibit? What influence do light verbs have on the argument structure of light verb constructions? The analyses draw on different frameworks, including Generative Syntax and Construction Grammar, and combine corpus linguistic investigations with theoretical modeling.

Palatine Church Visitations, 1609

The district of Kusel was situated in the western part of the German Palatinate, from which area came many early emigrants to America. Considering the almost permanent residence of the Palatines in a given area (prior to emigration), the proof that a particular name occurs in an early visitation, as this publication does for Kusel, is almost sufficient evidence of the linkage between the emigrant and his forebears--a full century before the great period of emigration.

Urban Matters

The city as a complex socio-cultural structure plays a central role, economically, administratively as well as culturally. Factors such as higher population density, a more expansive infrastructure, and larger social and cultural diversity compared to rural areas have a substantial impact on urban society and urban communication. Focusing on the latter, the contributions to this volume discuss the characteristics and dynamics of urban language use, considering aspects such as contact, variation and change, as well as identity, indexicality, and attitudes, but also spatial factors including mobility, urbanisation/counterurbanisation, and diffusion processes. The collected articles provide an update of ‘first wave’ approaches of variationist sociolinguistics, but also establish a connection to ‘third wave’ research for readers from a broad range of fields, especially sociolinguistics, variationist linguistics, and dialectology. The book presents modern methodological and conceptual ideas and a wealth of new findings but also serves as a reference work, combining theoretical discussions with results from recent empirical studies.
