This volume, edited from the proceedings of a unique conference held at Sam Houston State University, offers the reader an independent Texas-style celebration of Medieval and Renaissance culture and thought. In the opening article, Richard North reveals some ways in which medieval literature pioneered the modern novel. The following essays, drawing from philosophy, literature, music, art, architecture, history, and linguistics, include studies of the portrayal of women in medieval literature and art; discussions surrounding the hero of Paradise Lost; explorations into the thought of Thomas Aquinas; explications of linguistic puzzles in Beowulf; analyses of Shakespeare’s plays; considerations of renaissance architecture and instrumental music; and an investigation into the influence of rhetoric on musical composition.

Unprecedented Realism
For almost two decades the work of Rodolfo Machado and Jorge Silvetti has remained at the forefront of theoretical production. Their rigorously detailed and exquisitely drawn projects characterize an attitude of aesthetic realism towards materials, construction, function, and the cultural role of architecture. Yet the conditions they address, and the effects they produce, are unprecedented. Their projects synthesize seemingly incompatible images, uses, and typologies. Unprecedented Realism is not an illustration of theory. Rather, what emerges is a constructive theory of architecture that understands the process of design itself as a distinct mode of knowledge—as theoretical research that is still irreducibly architectural. Unprecedented Realism presents both buildings and urban infrastructures: Steps of Providence, RI; Entrance for Cranbrook, Bloomfield Hills, Mich.; Carnegie-Mellon University Center, Pittsburgh; Pershing Square, Los Angeles; and Times Square, New York City. Over the last few decades, a rich and increasingly diverse practice has emerged in the art world that invites the public to touch, enter, and experience the work, whether it is in a gallery, on city streets, or in the landscape. Like architecture, many of these temporary artworks aspire to alter viewers' experience of the environment. Doctor Haydock, the resident GP of St. Mary Mead, hopes to cheer up Miss Marple as she recovers from the flu with a little story. The tale revolves around the return of the prodigal son of Major Laxton, the devilishly handsome Harry Laxton. Harry, after leading a life of childish indiscretions and falling head over heels for the village tobacconist’s daughter, has made good and returned to lay claim to his tumbling childhood home and introduce the village to his beautiful new wife. But, the villagers are prone to gossip about young Harry’s past, and one person in particular cannot forgive him for tearing down the old house. Will Miss Marple’s acumen be up to the task of solving the story?
The Descendants of George Palmer & Phebe Draper
George Palmer, Jr. (1795-1834) married Phebe Draper (1797-1879) in Canada ca. 1815. Phebe was born in Rome, New York, daughter of William Draper and Lydia Lathrop. Their children were born in Ontario. Phebe joined the L.D.S. Church in 1833. She married (2) Ebenezer Brown and later died in Draper, Utah. Descendants live in Utah, Idaho, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, California, and elsewhere.

Young Architects: Scale
Every spring for the last 18 years, the Architectural League of New York has invited young architects from around the world to submit their portfolios to be selected as the best of a new generation of talent. The Young Architects program has identified many of the best-known names in architecture today, including Steven Holl, Neil Denari, Billie Tsien, and Carlos Jimenez. This year's honorees are six young practices whose projects range in scale from an intimate theater to a floating football stadium.. The firms are: Douglas Pancoast, Vrinda Khanna and Robert Schultz, Sunil Bald and Yolande Daniels, Edward Mitchell, Omar Khan and Laura Gar falo, and Shih-Fu Peng and R is n Heneghan. This colorful title, the first to come out of the Young Architects program, includes photographs of built work, computer renderings, drawings, diagrams, and text, all in an inspiring mix of fresh ideas and creative vision. An introductory essay by Nina Rappaport provides an overview of current state of architectural practice. Future volumes of Young Architects will appear annually; these titles will serve as a guide to tomorrow's architectural luminaries.
