How does artistic practice lead to the production of knowledge? How does, in turn, artistic knowledge relate to its material base? How does contingent materiality guide the artist towards finding form and developing a statement? This volume is dedicated to the object as a process in order to offer new insights into the ways the object - broadly construed, comprising digital and other non-classical objects - becomes an active element in artistic practice.
A global survey of Pop art that reassesses its roots, impact, and legacy This groundbreaking book surveys the concurrent engagements with the spirit of Pop throughout the world, from the frequently studied activity in the United States, England, and France to less well-known developments in Central and Eastern Europe, Latin America, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. One of the first publications to examine Pop art with this global scope, The World Goes Pop explores the wide-ranging movements that developed on different continents, such as Nouveau Réalisme, Neo Dada, New Figuration, and Spiritual Pop. This unique presentation offers the opportunity to compare how Pop art around the world di...
In The Politics of Taste Ana María Reyes examines the works of Colombian artist Beatriz González and Argentine-born art critic, Marta Traba, who championed González's art during Colombia's National Front coalition government (1958–74). During this critical period in Latin American art, artistic practice, art criticism, and institutional objectives came into strenuous yet productive tension. While González’s triumphant debut excited critics who wanted to cast Colombian art as modern, sophisticated, and universal, her turn to urban lowbrow culture proved deeply unsettling. Traba praised González's cursi (tacky) recycling aesthetic as daringly subversive and her strategic localism as r...

Turner Prize winner Mark Leckey is one of the most influential contemporary artists working today. Since he came to prominence in the late 1990s, Leckey's practice has addressed the radical effect of technology on popular culture and has powerfully articulated the transition from analogue to digital culture. His work is often concerned with under-represented or overlooked aspects of British culture and explores ideas about both collective and personal history. For example, the film Fiorucci Made Me Hardcore 1999 uses sampled footage to trace dance subcultures in British nightclubs from the 1970s to the 1990s. Dream English Kid, 1964-1999 AD 2015 focuses on key episodes in his own life, constructed from "found memories" sourced primarily from the internet. This book, accompanying Leckey's first major show at Tate, combines newly commissioned writing with artist's scripts for performances, and illustrates his previous work as well as the intriguing sources of inspiration for this powerful, immersive new exhibition.
WATERSTONES BOOK OF THE YEAR 2022 THE INSTANT SUNDAY TIMES AND NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER 'A long overdue, revisionist history of art by the brilliant Katy Hessel . . . Never stuffy or supercilious, Hessel's book is a revelation and an important first step towards redressing the balance of an art world in which women have been sidelined, stepped over and trampled upon for far too long.' HARPER'S BAZAAR 'Katy Hessel is a brilliant chronicler of the overlooked. I am so thrilled this book exists as an empowering, enlightening guide to the unforgettable vision ...
