Rethinking commerce education in South Africa
This book aims to advance the knowledge on the future of business education in South Africa and to allow all relevant role players (universities and industry) the opportunity to debate and share ideas on how to best position business education to optimally serve the interest of students and the dynamic changes taking place in the world of work. Although some of these changes have taken shape before 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the need and pace for change. If business schools (in our context, faculties of economic and management sciences) do not adapt rapidly, they will be left behind by other up-and-coming industry providers. The research scope covers all business-related undergraduate and postgraduate economics, management and accounting programmes, excluding MBA programmes.
Economic Perspectives
Peet Strydom celebrated his 75th birthday on 20 January 2012. Within the spirit of the Ruiterbosch Conferences over the past 14 years, the editors suggested a book to commemorate this event and to celebrate the stimulating and fruitful discussions we had in the past. The invitation to all participants was that they should write a chapter on their particular field of interest. Business Cycles and Structural Change in South Africa
This book investigates the South African business cycle and its links to structural change in the economy. Against the backdrop of the democratic transition in 1994 and the global financial crisis, the authors study how business cycles in South Africa have changed and how cycles are related to key developments in the financial markets, international trade and business sentiment in the country. By focusing on peaks and troughs in economic activity – so-called ‘turning-point cycles’ – the book links up with the common approach of international policymakers to studying fluctuations in economic activity. The authors also introduce new approaches to measuring phases of the business cycle (to understand slow recoveries after the global crisis), provide comprehensive descriptions to complement quantitative analyses, and utilize new data sources that allow the measurement of economic activity over longer periods.
