Boeing Field
Even before there were runways, the area south of the city of Seattle was Washington's aviation hub. Charles Hamilton, a daredevil dubbed "Crazy Man of the Air," became the first flyer in the state when he coaxed his Curtiss biplane into the sky over Meadows Racetrack in 1910. He promptly crashed. With the help of William Boeing and his growing aviation company, Boeing Field opened in 1928. In those early days, brave air travelers could hitch a ride along with bags of mail in cold, noisy biplanes. Bigger, better aircraft soon followed, but wartime intervened. Thousands of Flying Fortress bombers emerged from Boeing's Plant 2 at the edge of the airfield and winged off to war. In the years after, Boeing Field served a dazzling array of winged machines--from the smallest Piper Cub to Air Force One.

A Mind Over Matter is a biography of the Nobel Prize-winning theoretical physicist, Philip W. Anderson. Anderson is widely regarded as one of the most accomplished and influential physicists of the second half of the twentieth century. Unlike the physicists who appear on television or write popular books, Anderson studied the physics of the very many, i.e., the science of how vast numbers of atoms conspire together to create everything from liquid water to sparkling diamonds, and from semiconductors (essential for cell phones and computers) to superconductors (essential for MRI machines). More than any other single person, Anderson transformed the patchwork field of solid-state physics into the intellectually coherent discipline now called condensed matter physics. In the 60 ́s when abortion was illegal in most states women had to resort to finding an alternate place to have the procedure done. These illegal clinics were few and far between but one place did exist. The Riverside Woman ́s Center was established for the very rich to rid themselves of unwanted pregnancies. Annie was a famous model who didn ́t want her career disrupted by an unplanned pregnancy. She also didn ́t want to risk losing the love of her life, who had not yet established himself in the art community. Without consulting him, she rid herself of the child only to find several years later, that the child had been born alive and was rescued by an employee that was a family friend. She also suffered the consequences of being unable to have any more children. The child is named Crystal. When the friend passes away, she leaves the information she had about Crystal ́s family and she reconnects with them in the only way she can and the only way she knows how. Her mother is driven to her death, while her father kills himself with her help, and after finding out the truth. Was what she did to them, anything less than what they did to her? Think about it.
